GARDENING WITH PURPOSE

Greetings!

Garden of Eatin' Did you know that gardening has been the #1 hobby in America for years? We love our gardens! They bring beauty, peace and sanctuary to our busy lives. Gardens once were just pretty spaces filled with lovely flowers. But these days people are bringing an added dimension to their gardens. They are gardening with meaning and purpose.

Gardening trends come and go - and 2013 is no exception. Instead of just window boxes of geraniums and petunias, today's gardens are more about meaning and purpose. "Gardening with flowers is great, but it's even better if there's a dual purpose or benefit" says Diane Blazek, spokeswoman for the National Garden Bureau --... "are they drought resistant, do they add value to your home, will they attract wildlife, will they teach your children about nature?"

We here at Edgebrook Lutheran Church have also embraced the gardening with meaning and purpose concept. Our community garden, "The Garden of Eatin'" has been planted to grow vegetables for Elijah's Pantry, the Food Pantry in the Logan Square area. Under the direction of ELC member and Master Gardener, Pat Morin, this raised bed garden was constructed at the east end of our property last year. This year a bumper crop of tomatoes, zucchini and other vegetables is maturing and will soon be ready for distribution to people who might not have ready access to fresh vegetables.

Church and community members are also encouraged to "plant a row for the hungry" in their home gardens. Excess produce from home gardens can be brought to the church for distribution to Elijah's pantry.

Stop by and take a look at how our garden is growing. Perhaps you'd like to lend a hand with the maintenance. Or bring in some vegetables from your home garden for this worthwhile effort. Talk to Pat Morin or call the Church Office to let them know that you want to help!

 VBS Is Coming!

It's not too late to be part of this year's VBS. Come on Monday to register on-site. From July 29 through August 2, Edgebrook Lutheran Church will be transformed to rockin' kingdom as we host Kingdom Rock, this summer's Vacation Bible School again in partnership with Edgebrook Covenant Church. The program will run from 6:30 - 8 pm.

Sunday School Teachers What is it to be a Sunday School or Youth Leader?

Do you think you know what it is to be a Sunday School or Confirmation Leader at ELC? Are you sure? You may be surprised. On August 11th following the service, Chris will be hosting a gathering in Rising Chapel to tell you what volunteering with Sunday School or Confirmation would look like. All are invited, even if you are just curious. As our children and youth ministries keep growing and more and more young people are coming to God and to ELC, we need fresh faces to help with the activities for these groups. One urgent area of need is help with Sunday School and Confirmation.

The Crib Another Night at The Crib

At The Crib, The Night Ministry's overnight facility for homeless youth, our Night Ministry Team delivered and served a hearty meal on July 12.  The meal consisted of chicken and cheese enchiladas, Spanish rice, a mixed green salad, with ice cream bars and home-made cookies (thanks to the baking skills of Jordan Kerr) for dessert. Not a morsel was left behind and the youth were very pleased with their meal. We get great pleasure watching the youth eat with enthusiasm what we have prepared and served to them while they enjoy the company of other young people! It is also heart warming to hear the youth express their appreciation for our efforts when "gratitudes" (a type of communal table grace) are shared before they eat.

A big thank-you to Lisa Godde and Salvatore Greca for their help in serving and transporting The Crib meals. Thank-you also to Marti Corcoran for 7 new bath towels and to Elsie Carlson for 6 nice bath towels all for use at The Crib.

Travel size toiletries, plain white unisex cotton socks, men's and ladies briefs in assorted sizes are always in need by The Crib. We continue to use packaged store-bought cookies for the Night Ministry too. If you can donate items of this type, please bring them to the church office or place them in the donations cabinet in Fellowship Hall.   They will be greatly appreciated and used by needy right here in Chicago.

And some Great News!

Thrivent

We recently were notified by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans that our Night Ministry project at ELC was approved for another $1,600.00 annual grant (the maximum amount). This is the third year in a row we have received a grant from Thrivent. The grant will allow us to continue to generously serve the clients of The
Night Ministry even beyond the funds allocated through the church budget. We are genuinely grateful for Thrivent's gift and continuing encouragement of our project.
