Did you know that gardening has been the #1 hobby in America for years? We love our gardens! They bring beauty, peace and sanctuary to our busy lives. Gardens once were just pretty spaces filled with lovely flowers. But these days people are bringing an added dimension to their gardens. They are gardening with meaning and purpose.
Gardening trends come and go - and 2013 is no exception. Instead of just window boxes of geraniums and petunias, today's gardens are more about meaning and purpose. "Gardening with flowers is great, but it's even better if there's a dual purpose or benefit" says Diane Blazek, spokeswoman for the National Garden Bureau --... "are they drought resistant, do they add value to your home, will they attract wildlife, will they teach your children about nature?"
We here at Edgebrook Lutheran Church have also embraced the gardening with meaning and purpose concept. Our community garden, "The Garden of Eatin'" has been planted to grow vegetables for Elijah's Pantry, the Food Pantry in the Logan Square area. Under the direction of ELC member and Master Gardener, Pat Morin, this raised bed garden was constructed at the east end of our property last year. This year a bumper crop of tomatoes, zucchini and other vegetables is maturing and will soon be ready for distribution to people who might not have ready access to fresh vegetables.
Church and community members are also encouraged to "plant a row for the hungry" in their home gardens. Excess produce from home gardens can be brought to the church for distribution to Elijah's pantry.
Stop by and take a look at how our garden is growing. Perhaps you'd like to lend a hand with the maintenance. Or bring in some vegetables from your home garden for this worthwhile effort. Talk to Pat Morin or call the Church Office to let them know that you want to help!
