Come Good Home
In honor of the return of our Youth Team from their Mission Trip to Kansas, we are sharing this article which ran in the
November 2008 Lutheran Magazine.

Greetings!
"Come good home" our friend Ken would say whenever we completed a visit. Not "Goodbye! See your later" or any other casual parting. No, Ken reverted to the words of his German grandmother, her blessing on departure. "Come good home" doesn't make grammatical sense in English. But in the language of love, comprehension supersedes correctness.
"Come good home," spoken in the language of love, sends us away in peace, covers us while gone and invites us to return in good condition. Hearing those words, a sojourner grasps both their meaning and significance.
"Come good home" could also be considered words of blessing from the Lord who wants us to depart in peace, travel in safety and return in good stead. That's what Ken's grandmother prayed for, too, in the leave-taking of a loved one when she spoke her benediction.
"Come good home" certainly is what I hear when I read God's word. We come as children to the baptismal font. We come as children to the Lord's table. We leave this Earth as children of the Heavenly Father, and we are received with a heavenly uniting.
For Ken, his grandmother before him and perhaps for us today, God's word to us as sojourners could be heard in the language of love, "Come good home."

Damsels in Distess!
The VBS singers have awesome costumes this year. Lady Lisa, Maid Jordan, and Maid Bridgette of Edgebrook Castle are looking for the following:
-Costume jewelry - three pendant necklaces that would be fitting of a lady and her maids and a large ring for Lady Lisa (Lisa's costume is blue with red and gold accents and the maids' costumes are purple with gold and green trim.)
-Ballet type slippers - size 7 1/2 in blue, red or gold
-Someone who is willing to do small alterations on the costumes. |
VBS Supplies Needed
To make this year's VBS a success, we need help in finding all the resources necessary to accommodate the 120 expected children. In both the Gathering Space and Fellowship Hall are tables set up where numbered cards listing needed supplies are set. We would invite you to take a card and bring the item on the card to ELC by July 21st. Also, please put your name and contact information on the sign-up sheet next to the card number you take. Also, feel free to register yourself as a volunteer or a child for VBS with the forms set out on those display tables.

Shoeboxes Needed
To turn Fellowship Hall into a castle for VBS, we are in need of lots of shoeboxes. If you have any at home that you can part with, please bring them to Chris at the church.

Sunday's Service to Celebrate the Homecoming of the Youth Group from Kansas
The kids are providing the sermon and have chosen the songs for this Sunday's service. Join us as we sing "Mighty to Save", "How Great is Our God", "Sing, Sing, Sing", "Give a Little Bit", and "Get Down". These are songs that have special meaning to the kids who went on this Mission Trip. Be there at the 10 a.m. Celebration Service to share the experiences of these wonderful young people.
 | | "Get Down" from the Mission Trip's Opening Night |
Come and celebrate in worship and song the return of our youth and their adult team leaders from their Mission Trip. They've been working hard to help the people of Garnett, Kansas build a better life. It's been hot. The work has been hard, but they've had an amazing experience. Come and share thanks with us for this wonderful experience.

Night Ministry News
On Wednesday, July 10, Night Ministry Team Leader, Ruth Ann Chaffee woke up saying to herself "What a lovely day! I can't imagine a better day and better weather for serving meals on the street in Uptown". And that is just what the team did. 120 meals with generous "seconds" were prepared at church and served later in the evening to the clients who came to the Night Ministry's health care van for services. Something a bit unusual, we also served about 10 elementary school aged children who came to us accompanied by their parents.
We remembered Helen Fagerman and her family in prayer at our gathering. Helen had been a faithful meal prep volunteer until her 99th. year before her recent death. She specialized in packing cookies and earned the nickname of "Cookie" for her efforts, the sound of which made her giggle.
Thanks to Dave and Bobbi Schlickting, Joan Mandrela, Agnes Klotzbuecher, Wilma Nock, Jean Reichenbach, Virginia Bransfield, Helen Estes, Ruth Dehne, and Bev Compton for preparing the meals, cleaning up, and packing everything for transport. Lauretta Sage, and Abel and Elizabeth Rivera helped serve the meals. As has become the usual, "thank-you", smiles, and cheerful conversation were abundant on the street.
