Please join the fun on Monday, December 2nd, as we hear from Dave Goodman telling us "What's in a Fly Vest." Always the entertainer, Dave's talk will surely enlighten and educate, as well as entertain you!
In addition to Mr. Goodman, we have lined up "The Three Gray Beards" to share with you their fishing adventures of 2013. Of course most of the AFF falls into a sort of "gray beard" category, but in this case it's Keven Kleweno, John Landt, and Frank Stevens. With tales of the fishing season past, and a history of a good story or two, their program promises to bring a smile to Mr. Grinch, were he going to be in the audience.
 If all this isn't enough, we sill have the annual gift exchange at the December 2nd meeting. When you bring in a gift (please limit your spending to around $20) you will will receive a raffle ticket. When your ticket is drawn, you choose a gift from the collection. Our generous ghillie sweetens the gift table with a few extra fly fishing related goodies.

2013 AFF Scholarship Announced
Alaska Fly Fishers is pleased to announce the 2013 scholarship recipient, Kevin Fraley.

Kevin is enrolled in the Master's degree program in the School of Fisheries & Ocean Sciences (SFOS) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. His research focuses on resident rainbow trout and seasonal movement in Willow Creek, using implanted radio telemetry tags in 40 adult rainbow trout.
Several anglers reported catching the tagged fish during 2013 and the trout appeared healthy as well as healing nicely after the implant surgery. Habitat mapping will be completed during the summer of 2014.

After discovering a passion for fly fishing in her teens, April Vokey soon dedicated her life to the pursuit, eventually culminating in her founding Fly Gal Ventures in 2007 at age 24. She has established herself as a respected authority in the sport and has traveled the globe in pursuit of gamefish on a fly rod.
Her writing has appeared in numerous industry leading publications including Fly Fisherman, Fly Rod & Reel, and Fly Fusion magazines. In July 2012, April became the first female fly angler to be featured in Outside magazine for their "XX-Factor" segment.
Also a popular TV personality, April has been featured on the Outdoor Channel's Buccaneers and Bones series and as a host on Fly Nation TV.
She is an FFF certified casting instructor, a fly-tying instructor, an active conservationist and a traveling speaker.

FLY TYING CLINIC NEWS

Next time you see Frank Stevens, stop and shake his hand and thank him for all he has done for AFF. After several years of running the monthly fly tying clinics and tying contests, he will be taking a step back from his post as the fly tying coordinator. I already know many of you by name and many more by face. My name is Chad Gage and I will be transitioning into Frank's position on the board as of the first of the year.

With the temperatures finally taking a plunge, we had a good turn out at the November fly tying clinic at the William Hernandez Fish Hatchery. We had several members tying a number of different patterns.
Our next tying clinic will be December 21st. Whether you are new to fly tying or experienced, stop by and join us. We start at 9:00 a.m., upstairs at the hatchery located at the intersection of Reeve Blvd. and Post Road. Clinics run until 3:00 p.m. Park in in the main paring lot and enter the front doors. We are at the top of the stairs to the left.

Life in the Redd

Salmon eggs. What do you know about salmon eggs? There is a lot more to this than you may think.
Let's begin with a brief overview of a generalized salmon life cycle.
In fact, let's start the story with the egg. The egg is deposited to be incubated during winter until the fish hatch and become free swimming fry. After some development and growth, they become
juveniles called parr until they become smolts that migrate to the ocean. In the ocean, they grow and mature until they migrate back to freshwater to spawn. This sounds easy enough but it is really not so simple. Lots of stuff are going on here.

News from Cooper Landing:
Darwin Peterson of Cooper Landing passed away peacefully on November 21st in Anchorage with his family by his side. He was 84 years old. Darwin was born in Butte, Montana on August 15, 1929 to Alfred and Emma Peterson. He was raised on the family cattle ranch in Montana's Big Hole valley with his three brothers. In 1951, Darwin joined the U.S. Air Force and served as a pilot flying C-119s in the Korean War. After the military, Darwin returned to the life of a cattle rancher in Montana. In 1962, he married Geneese Cook and the two of them started a mink ranch in Stevensville, Montana where they lived for many years and raised their children. In 1987, the couple moved to Cooper Landing where they bought property near the Russian River and built the Kenai Cache tackle shop. Darwin and Geneese owned and operated the Kenai Cache for 16 years and after selling the business they built their retirement home on 5 acres of land overlooking Kenai Lake. Darwin was known for his unique sense of humor and his generosity. He had many friends and was cherished by his family. Darwin loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman and hunter. Darwin is survived by his beloved wife Geneese of almost 52 years; daughter Debora Jane and her husband Tommy Adcock of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; daughter Debra Jean and her husband Mike Tonkovich of Billings, Montana; son Andrew Peterson and his wife Sara of Anchorage; son Darwin Peterson and his wife Kristen of Anchorage; brother Dr. John Peterson of Rushford, Minnesota; and brother Harold Peterson of Wisdom, Montana. Darwin and Geneese have 8 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, Darwin asked that donations be given to the Cooper Landing Emergency Services (P.O. Box 510, Cooper Landing, AK 99572) or the Central Peninsula Hospice (P.O. Box 2584, Soldotna, AK 99669).
Darwin and Geneese have supported the Alaska Fly Fishers for as long as any one can remember.

His work has appeared in a number of periodicals including Fly Rod & Reel, American Angler, Flyfisherman, and Alaska Magazine. He is also the author of Fly Fishing Secrets of Alaska's Best Guides.
AFF meetings continue to be held the first Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the Redington Ballroom at the Millennium Hotel on Spenard Road.
