The AFF Fly Fishing Seminar
finale

Monday, May 13 6:30 - 8:30PM
FLY CASTING - This is a session that can use all levels of proficiency. The people who attend the seminar need to know fly casting is an ongoing learning process, and you can be successful fishing without being a master caster. You will need to bring a balanced outfit including an old leader. The club will provide yarn to represent the fly. Casting will be done outside, so plan on dressing warm.
Location:
Main BP Bldg, Conference Room C.
The fly fishing seminar is a success due to individual club members giving of their time and energy. Seminar attendees tell us every year that it is the interaction with our regular members they enjoy the most. Please plan on helping educate a new, budding fly fisher, and contribute back to your club.
If you are planning to help, contact Rich Johnson at 243-1093 wk/ 243-1043 evenings/ 440-1830 cell, or by Email purnellphoto@gci.net

A special thank you is also extended to Art Peck for designing and creating the shadowbox.

FLY TYING RETREAT
from Dick Long
|
|
Beach Lake Lodge was the site of this year's AFF tying retreat. Seven attendees, Rob, Frank, Mike H., Kate, Ryan, Scott and Dick shared the duties of cooking, cleaning, and stoking the fires, all while having a great time tying flies.
Mike H demonstrated dubbing techniques with his Nor-Vise, and Dick entertained the group with a game of "Name-That-Dish."
Frank won being the first to correctly state the Saturday evening main course tasted more like the Sunday breakfast casserole than the promised lasagna.
Everyone enjoyed being with friends, spinning yarns and tying flies.
With the use of the lodge and both cabins, there was plenty of space to enjoy. The Beach Lake Lodge met the needs of the attendees well. Mark your calendar for the end of April next year, the lodge has already been reserved

Ocean Acidification
by Bill Hauser
Wow. It has been a busy time lately. I attended an ocean science conference recently and reading several scientific reports. Some of the important topics included information about Yukon River salmon, global warming, and ocean acidification. During the 2013 Ocean Marine Research Symposium I arrived a bit earlier than I had intended and heard most of a presentation I had not planned to attend. The topic was ocean acidification. It was scary as hell. I did not follow the details of the chemistry very well but I could certainly appreciate the results and discussion.

Lea Rueter Teaches Fly Tying in Aniak!
Member Lea Rueter, an AFF member who is currently teaching school in Aniak, contacted us about the possibilities of helping with vises and supplies to teach her second grade students the art of fly tying. Thanks to some of our members, Lea's request was fulfilled. Not only have these talented students experimented with traditional patterns, but they have even designed and named a fly for fishing their home waters! Go LEA!
The future of our sport is in our youth. Please encourage any young person interesting in tying flies to attend our local monthly tying clinic. They only need to bring a desire to learn and their enthusiasm, we have everything else at the clinic. (join us the 3rd Saturday of each month, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the William Hernandez Fish Hatchery on Reeve Blvd. just south of Post Road.
AFF has been asked to help with a clinic at the Sutton library on May 11, 2013 and with the Palmer Youth Program in June. We need to have 4 to 5 tiers at each clinic.
