Tony Weaver is renown throughout the fly fishing world for his casting and fishing techniques. He is a FFF Certified Master Fly-casting Instructor and is known for his innovative teaching abilities. He has guided in Alaska and has been an Alaskan resident for over 46 over years. He has also appeared on OLN, Versus, and the American Sportsman, worked as chief technical editor for Fish Alaska Magazine and has written for Fish and Fly, FFF Flyfisher, Fly Rod and Reel and Flyfisherman magazines. 

 

 

 

Tony is also the author of Topwater, Fly fishing the Last Frontier Alaska. Tony is also the host of the local radio show Wolf Outdoors and is a writer for ADN. Twice a year he  teaches at the Bonefish School in the Bahamas and guides for Tarpon. Tony has fished the tropics from Andros Island to Guatemala for a multitude of saltwater gamefish. He has fished Alaska extensively from the Arctic to Prince of Wales Island and works as a consultant for many outdoor companies. Join Tony for a whirlwind multi-media tour of some of the world's greatest saltwater adventures including some of Alaska's saltwater fly fishing opportunities. Tony's presentation will also include how, when, and where to catch saltwater gamefish on the fly.

Thank You, Norm!

During the Great Alaska Sportsman's Show, PHW honored Norm Norlander for his support. Shown here, volunteer Laura Orr presents Norm with a handmade shadowbox showcasing military medallions, special flies and a plaque expressing gratitude towards his undying generousity.  A special thank you is also extended to Art Peck for designing and creating the shadowbox.

PHW sponsored fly tying, knot tying, and casting sessions at the Women's Veterans Retreat held at the VA Clinic on April 20th.  Volunteers included  Janelle Aguila, Jolynne Howard, Margaret Klatt, Laura Orr, Kelley Pearson, Jan Schnorr, Heidi Simpson, and Susan Winton.

Future Fishing Trip.  

During the next month, PHW will take participants on a fishing trip to the Kenai River on April 28th to fish for rainbows.  Bob Rima, owner of Kenai River Drifters Lodge will sponsor and coordinate lodging and guided fishing and Sunrise Café will provide some meal support.  Northern Industrial Training (NIT) will provide a bus to transport 28 PHW participants.  This is such a marvelous trip! JBER Honors PHW Volunteers

On April 23rd, JBER will honor PHW volunteers who have donated their time to help JBER personnel.  Individuals who volunteered at least 100 to over 500 hours will receive either a bronze, silver, or gold medallion.  Congratulations to each of the following and thank you for your generous donation of time. Raffles

PHW volunteers, with the assistance of Art Peck and the Alaska Fly Fishers, sponsored two raffles, one each at the Wasilla Sportsman's Show and Great Alaska Sportsman's Show.  The prizes included a beautiful custom made rod donated by Heidi Simpson and a Nor-vise.  We wish to thank all individuals who purchased tickets to support this special event.

Nancy Berets, librarian of Sutton Public Library, and Clayton Afelin, a past member of Alaska Fly Fishers, extend a big thanks to our members who donated fly fishing books, tying manuls and VHS tapes about fly fishing and tying for the new Sutton library.

As a follow-up to our donation, we have been asked to hold a basic tying clinic on Saturday, May 11, 2013 from 11am for at least two hours of instruction. This is an oppurtunity for 4 or 5 AFF members to share their love of fly tying.

Beach Lake Lodge was the site of this year's AFF tying retreat.  Seven attendees, Rob, Frank, Mike H., Kate, Ryan, Scott and Dick shared the duties of cooking, cleaning, and stoking the fires, all while having a great time tying flies.

Member Lea Rueter, an AFF member who is currently teaching school in Aniak, contacted us about the possibilities of helping with vises and supplies to teach her second grade students the art of fly tying.  Thanks to some of our members, Lea's request was fulfilled. Not only have these talented students experimented with traditional patterns, but they have even designed and named a fly for fishing their home waters! Go LEA!

The future of our sport is in our youth. Please encourage any young person interesting in tying flies to attend our local monthly tying clinic. They only need to bring a desire to learn and their enthusiasm, we have everything else at the clinic. (join us the 3rd Saturday of each month, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the William Hernandez Fish Hatchery on Reeve Blvd. just south of Post Road.

AFF has been asked to help with a clinic at the Sutton library on May 11, 2013 and with the Palmer Youth Program in June. We need to have 4 to 5 tiers at each clinic.
