TYING CLINIC NEWS from Frank Stevens
tying clinic

Our first clinic in our new space at the William J. Hernandez Hatchery was a great success with 29 tiers doing their "thing". Thanks to everyone for pitching in to pick up and put away the tables and chairs. We should be able to increase our tying time by at least another 15 minutes next time; the cleanup went so smoothly.

Cheryl and Jolynne had an avid group around their area learning to tie the Aztec style of fly.  I hope to have them back in March to demonstrate a sculpin pattern using the same techniques.

We have a request for spinning deer hair for our February clinic in conjunction with tying the Morris mouse pattern.  Anyone who has tied this pattern or wishes to demo spinning deer hair, please contact me so I can have an area setup for the demonstration.

Tip of Month:  Beginners to experienced tiers keep your working thread to 1 or 2 inches in length.

Project Healing Waters from Jan Schnorr

Volunteers Needed
PHW Block

Project Healing Waters is looking forward to another fabulous year in 2013. During October, over 250 injured soldiers returning from Afghanistan were assigned to the Warrior Transition Unit at JBER. In an effort to help them transition to civilian life, we are meeting with them and providing fly fishing activities to "hook" them into our favorite sport of fly fishing.

Our activities are expanding this year and we need your help. Our activities include teaching fly casting, tying, float tubing, rod building, lake fishing, stream fishing, and salmon fishing as well as leading fishing trips. Volunteers are needed for these activities as well as to help raise funds because all activities are provided free of cost to soldiers and veterans. Make one of your New Years Resolutions VOLUNTEERING in our community!!! Come share your passion for fly fishing and fly tying with "Those Who Serve".

You can contact Mike Malone or Jan Schnorr at  PHWAlaska@gmail.com

 for information about VOLUNTEER opportunities.

SEEKING BOOKS FOR LIBRARY
From Frank Stevens
New Sutton Library Branch
Sutton library has opened a new location.  Part of the new look is to expand a fly fishing section.

I know that many AFF members have extra copies of tying manuals, fishing books, etc., that are not being used.  Here is your chance to recycle them. This is a great way to reach out and spread the word and idea of fly fishing.

Jolynne and I have volunteered to gather your donation and get them up to Sutton.  We will accept your donations at the February monthly meeting.

FISH TALK by Bill Hauser

Kill Trout to Save Trout

 Hauser book front
What is the definition of an invasive species? These are species that are found outside their native range. They may be called non-native, exotic, introduced, non-indigenous, or more. There are many ways an organism may become invasive. A fish may become invasive, for example, if a river in one drainage may change course and flow into an adjacent drainage and species unique to either drainage may become invasive in the other drainage. Anadromous fish may stray and invade a previously uncolonized stream. You can imagine other ways but, by far, invasive species are present because of direct human interventions.

In North America, this began almost as soon as the first colonists arrived as they introduced organisms from Europe. By the mid-1800s, east coast organisms were being transferred to the west coast. Humans have caused extensive, widespread, worldwide introductions of innumerable organisms. Many have failed to become established but many that have become established have caused innumerable unintended consequences.
