By-Laws Vote and December Activities

Our monthly meeting on December 3rd will be held at the Millennium starting at 7 PM in the Ballroom on the third floor. Agenda items include

  • Voting on revised by-laws. During the November business meeting, some AFF by-law changes were recommended to the membership. The purpose of the changes was to increase the number of member-at-large board positions from four to five and to designate one position as the "Tying Clinic Coordinator". At the present time, there are ten members on the board. Some board members felt that the number of ten could potentially result in a tie-vote. The proposed change would increase the number to eleven, which would potentially prevent a tie-vote. Board members also feel that the Tying Clinic Coordinator supervises numerous activities including ordering materials, staffing the tying clinics, and running the tying contest, which requires board approval so they want him/her to be a board member. All changes to the constitution reflect increasing the number of board members from ten to eleven and designating one member as the "Tying Clinic Coordinator." Additional comments from members include the following: reduce the number of board members to deal with the tie-breaker or give the tie-breaker authority to the president; do not assign a specific task to the 5th new position. Members will have an opportunity to vote on this change at the December meeting. click here to download a copy of the revised by-laws)
  • Three short club member presentations.  Bob Churchill will talk about programs for getting our kids involved in fly fishing and the ADF&G kids program. Mark Huber will present on fly casting certification opportunities and Keven Kleweno and Jim Hightower - the guys from the Fly Of The Month table - will talk about their 2012 summer fly fishing adventures.
  • Holiday Gift Exchange. Don't forget to bring a wrapped fly fishing gift valued up to $25 for the Christmas Gift Exchange. You get a ticket for your gift. When your ticket number is drawn you get to go to the gift table and choose any other wrapped gift there as your own. The Club seeds the table with a few gifts that are worth substantially more than $25, so you have an opportunity to take home something really nice! Trust us! A good time will be had by all participants!  Extra gifts from the exchange table will be added to the Ghillie raffle. All the gifts will go home with someone!
ELECTION RESULTS

Members voted at the November business meeting and elected the following individuals as officers and board members for 2013. Congratulations to all. Feel free to contact your board members if you have any questions or concerns. Their contact information will be posted on the Alaska Fly Fishers website.

TYING CLINIC!! from Frank Stevens

The last clinic for the year is on December 15th located at 701 E. Tudor Rd. upstairs in the KTUU classroom. Enter at East end of building and follow the signs to classroom. Tying time is from 10am to 4pm. New tiers are welcome. We have vises and materials. If you have your own vice bring it and we will help you learn to tie flies for fishing in Alaska.

We are looking for a new place to hold our clinics because we are losing the KTUU classroom at the end of the year. Watch your newsletter for updates for our new location.

FISH TALK by Bill Hauser
Change Is Not Always Good

Hauser book front

Recall last month's FISH TALK. It described how sloughs ("slews") function and why sloughs are important fish habitat in the Susitna River. Prime quality sloughs often have upwelling groundwater that is important spawning habitat for chum salmon and, in some rivers such as the Susitna River, sockeye salmon as well. Rearing salmon and resident fishes also use slough habitat for overwintering and rearing.   Click here to download the entire copy of this article to read the rest of this month's Fish Talk.

Bill Hauser is the author of Letters From Alaska, The Inside to the Outside and the NEW book Fishes of the Last Frontier, Life Histories, Biology, Ecology and Management of Alaska Fishes.

Kenai River Fall Flooding Blog Comments
Hi Guys, Ive contacted the govt officials who are charged with debris removal along the Kenai River and have yet to hear anything positive regarding removing flood debris from Sept. Are you aware of the large dock debris at the Kenai/Russian confluence and are there any plans to call for volunteers to clean it up?
