Change Is Not Always Good

Recall last month's FISH TALK. It described how sloughs ("slews") function and why sloughs are important fish habitat in the Susitna River. Prime quality sloughs often have upwelling groundwater that is important spawning habitat for chum salmon and, in some rivers such as the Susitna River, sockeye salmon as well. Rearing salmon and resident fishes also use slough habitat for overwintering and rearing. Click here to download the entire copy of this article to read the rest of this month's Fish Talk.
Bill Hauser is the author of Letters From Alaska, The Inside to the Outside and the NEW book Fishes of the Last Frontier, Life Histories, Biology, Ecology and Management of Alaska Fishes.
