Happy New Year everyone!
Well I took a couple weeks off from Captain Ed's Newsletter as there really was much going on and believe it or not I was at a loss of words...
Well, we are back and the days are starting to get longer - We just picked up 3 minutes of daylight in the morning and 8 minutes in the afternoon! So I think this is a great time to start the countdown to spring.
First on the list is the Southern Cross Boat Owners Meeting, to be held in Newport Rode Island, February 5th, 6th & 7th, 2016. It is a great group of folks that have sailed all over, which includes not only trans-Atlantic passage makers but circumnavigators. Time certainly flies and I can't believe I have owned my Southern Cross the Sarah Maria for 15 years now! I should mention that the Super Bowl will also be that weekend (Feb 7th to be exact), and I will certainly be guarding the cold cut platter.
Next on the list will be the New England Boat Show at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center, February 13th through February 21st. This is a good reason to get out of the house and start thinking of boats and summer.
Shortly after the Eagle festival spring will be upon us! Boats will need to be uncovered, painted, prepped and launched! Then we can really get excited about summer, which is as you can see not far away!
So you may be asking Captain Ed, what are we to do on these long cold lonely nights on our countdown to spring?
Well here's my plan:
Dan Swift of Exit Reality has offered office space for Seamanship Instruction, and I am ready to pick the dates & times, as well as the subject matter. I am considering Wednesday evenings from 6-8:00 pm. The first topic will be Rope Mechanics, if there is such a thing - we will be working on knots and splices, where, when & why to use them. The first class will be held January 13, 2016, the cost will be $10 to help pay expenses and for snacks. This class will be limited to 10 people and the doors will be open at 5pm for those who would like to talk boats before the class!
Please drop me an email if you are interested in this class and I will send you more details.
Thanks again for a great 2015 sailing season.
