Captain Ed's Sailing
Whoa, Whoa, summer is not over yet there just will not be any kids around. We still have some great sailing opportunities left this year. This past week has given us a little view of what to expect right through the fall with steady winds and cooler weather.
During the last few classes we have been concentrating on navigation as we sailed out to the isle of shoals. I had to give Mika the wonder dog a couple of days off since he had made three trips out to the Isle of shoals three days in a row. Steady westerly winds enabled us to do that. During this past weekend the winds shifted to the southeast so we sailed towards Rockport to dodge the waves that are broken by the land mass of Cape Ann.
Bottom line I am still sailing, call or email me to save your spot.
If you are interested in a class, or would like to book a family sail on Monday, call me at 508-451-0431
September and the beginning of October offer great sailing opportunities if you are interested in a sailing class or a family charter from labor day, and into October.
By the way we had the SPOT turned on this weekend Check it out under the quick links section.
A great way to end the summer and organize up as a family is to book a Hands On Family Sailing Charter with captain Ed's Sailing. Come out and learn some sailing skills as a family while under my instruction.   Please, please, please I beg of thee if you are coming sailing with us TAKE  SEA SICK MEDICATION. I can not stress this enough, you cannot believe how sick you can get.
Captain Ed's Sailing gets more popular each year, however there are always great weekends as well as weekdays available.
At the end of the day you walk away from the boat and leave the cost of owning and maintaining the boat up to me.
Call or email to reserve your spot for this summer.  508-451-0431  Captain Ed's Sailing
If you like what you see feel free to forward it to friends and family no matter where, as my clients come from around the country, as well as from around the world.

Should you have a boat survey or not
This past year I have been noticing that some of my clients owning their own boats have been using Progressive insurance. I am thinking of switching to them myself if I can. The good thing of course would be I hope a cost savings over other companies that insure boats.

Questionably another advantage of going through them is the fact that they don't always require a boat survey in order to insure the boat. Good and Bad. There are a lot of nice boats out there built in the seventies and eighties are selling at a steal, and waiting for a new home. This again is allowing the average person the ability to own a boat at a reasonable price.

By not adding  the cost of a survey you can it seems at first save another few hundred dollars.

The problem of buying a boat without a survey is that you do not know what you are buying. What is the shape of the rigging, the engine, the sails, and the  other electrical and mechanical systems of the boat.

If the boat has not been re rigged the rigging of a boat built in the eighties is definitely shot. The engine can be history at any time as well. If the boat had any wiring done in the eighties by a house electrician it is probably not up to boating codes as well.

a professional surveyor will find all of the faults to this beauty that you have your eyes on, and in the process save you enough money on your purchase to take care of all of these faults or to at least let you know what you are buying.

I have had both of my boats the Sarah Maria as well as the Bella Donna both surveyed and ended up changing the rigging on both boats. Because of this I have the confidence to bring my sails in tight and sail them hard when I want.

During my last delivery I had a shroud let go on me. The results could have been devastating if we were on the other tack. We could have lost the mast. A survey would have pointed out this fault on the boat.

There are plenty of good surveyors out there to chose from but the one that I can recommend is Jay Michaud. If you are buying a boat he is the guy to use.

Things to do after sailing with

       Captain Ed's Sailing

A day sailing on the Bella Donna will take up to 6 hours of your time, at the end of the day, if you still have some energy, there is still plenty of other things to do around Newburyport.

There are plenty of restaurants around town, such as the Grog, Michaels, The Black Cow, and Loretta's, restaurants. A great place to grab a Sandwich before a sailing trip is at the Warren street market

Out towards Plum Island you will find Bob's Lobster.

Make a trip more exciting on your way out to Bob's Lobster by renting an EZ pedal bike from EZ Pedaler of Newburyport

If you are looking for a place to stay while in the area my client's have stayed at the Essex Street Inn,  The Blue out on Plum Island, as well as The Garrison Inn , and the The Compass Rose Inn

We live in a great area to try out some salt water fishing as well. For short days I like Channel Edge Charters, or Flounder Fishing, from the Captains Lady . For Longer excursions check out The Clipper Fleet in Salisbury or again the Captains Lady out on Plum Island.
