Dear all,Top

We look ahead to Tenso Days Mechelen (BE) : a must-go for every fan of choral singing, a weekend full of activities - including a special Tenso premiere of Laurent Durupt, the very first Tenso Young Composers Award winner.  And we look back at the 2015 edition of Tenso Professionals Meeting in Porto, about engaging children for choral music.

Tenso Days Mechelen (BE) | 15-17 May

For choral music fans around Europe, it is becoming a May tradition : for an overview of contemporary choral music, performed by the top professional choirs in Europe, the Belgian city of Mechelen is the place to be.

Three Tenso choirs perform

In Mechelen, Cappella Amsterdam (NL) under conductor Daniel Reuss will perform the world premiere of .... souffler sur quelques lueurs.... by French composer Laurent Durupt (see below), the winner of the 2011 Tenso Young Composers Award, in a programme with works of Ton de Leeuw and Daan Manneke.

Nils Schweckendiek and his Helsingin kamarikuoro (FI, photo) will present a concert with Finnish choral classics; Musicatreize (FR), under Roland Hayrabedian, will bring recent works of Alexandros Markeas, Guy Reibel and others to Mechelen.

Work by Tenso Young Composer Award winner to be premiered

In 2011, Laurent Durupt (FR) won the very first Tenso Young Composer Award: a commission for a new work for a capella chamber choir. Cappella Amsterdam under Daniel Reuss will premiere ....Souffler sur quelques lueurs... on Friday 15 May during Tenso Days Mechelen.

Durupt wrote his piece during his stay at the Villa Medici in Rome, surrounded by the colours and sounds of the city. He chose a text of René Char, whose rich vocals reminded him of glimmering lights hidden in waves of sound.

Meet this year's workshop participants here

When we started developing the composers workshop in 2009, we could only hope that young composers would be interested to work with us on creating new choral music. Now, six years later, we see that the workshop draws a great number of high-level applications from young composers wanting to be coached in writing for choir. Meet this year's selection:

  • Sebastian Androne (RO)
  • Sofia Borges (PT)
  • Chang Shiuan (TW)
  • Léo Collin (FR)
  • Seán Ó Dálaigh (IE)

Looking back at Tenso Professionals Meeting : engaging the young

From 10-12 April, music professionals from around Europe gathered in Porto for the annual Tenso Professionals Meeting (TPM). Hosted by the Coro Casa da Música, the participants discussed how professional choirs can work with children, producing high-quality projects that inspire all participants.

For an impression, have a look at the short movie below. For backgrounds and links to some of the inspiring projects that were presented, visit the TPM page at our website.
