Reduced Racial Disparity in Kidney Transplant Outcomes From 1990-2012
|
Kidney transplant (KT) is the optimal treatment for most patients with ESRD, as it provides a longer life expectancy and improves the quality of life compared to dialysis treatment. Despite these benefits, previous findings suggest that black transplant recipients experience poorer outcomes (e.g. worse graft and patient survival) than white recipients
Racial differences in KT outcomes have been attributed to both immunologic barriers (e.g. antibody matching and sensitization) and non-immunologic barriers (e.g. medication non-adherence, comorbid conditions, and socioeconomic barriers). Prior work suggests that these factors contribute to increased rates of graft loss in black transplant recipients. This article examined whether this disparity has improved in recent decades.

Network Patient Advisory Committee
|
The IPRO ESRD Network of New England's Patient Advisory Committee (PAC) is comprised of ESRD patients, transplant recipients, care partners, and family members. The mission of the PAC is to identify and act upon issues of concern of ESRD patients thereby improving their quality of life. PAC members inform patients about the ESRD Network, provide educational resources, help to promote patient-provider communication, and act as a bridge between the Network and facility. To nominate a PAC member, please fill out the PAC nomination form and fax it back to the Network at (203) 389-9902. |
Depression in Dialysis Patients
|
Depression is the most common psychiatric illness in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The reported prevalence of depression in the dialysis population varies from 22.8% (interview-based diagnosis) to 39.3% (self- or clinician-administered rating scales). Such differences were attributed to the overlapping symptoms of uremia and depression.

Patient Experience Assessment: ICH CAHPS
|
Patient experience surveys provide a critical and unique perspective on the quality of patient-centered healthcare delivery. These surveys provide a mechanism to systematically express the patients' voice on topics valued by patients when making decisions about choices in care. They also provide an assessment to healthcare organizations about their service that cannot be obtained from any other source.
CMS and other regulatory agencies have mandated the assessment of patients' experience as part of healthcare value-based purchasing programs and weighted the results to account for up to 30% of the total scoring. This is a testimony to the accepted importance of this metric as a fundamental assessment of quality.
