Visual Arts & Performing Arts
Dear Parents and OLF Families,

Over the past year, we have been blessed to be able to use McGowan Hall for our students. Our students utilize it for the performing arts, including:
  • Choir practice & choral music
  • Theatrical performances such the recent Passion Play, Christmas Play, Lip Sync, etc.
  • Spacial and rhythmic expression for Zumba elective
Our Performing Arts Department is growing with a number of teachers and parents willing to support this program. Mrs. Levinson, Mrs. Kelly and Mrs. Smithson were instrumental in supporting the student-led Christmas program. Our fifth grade parents and Mrs. Murphy ensured that the Passion Play was a great success! Thanks to the Schnarr Family, our storage shed has new shelves that are able to hold an increasing number of theatrical costumes.

For the Visual Arts Department, our wonderful "art moms/dad" continue to support the visual arts integration in the classrooms. We are looking forward to another "Pen & Paintbrush Exhibit" this year.

Beginning this week, we are also adding our artist and instructor, Mrs. Kim Frassett to our visual arts program. Mrs. Frassett will work closely with the art moms and faculty to increase the cross-curricular instruction of art, art history, technique and various subjects such as religion, social studies and science, for example.

Integration of additional fine arts experiences into our curricular instruction, whether visual or performing, are essential in providing a balanced curriculum. In doing so, we address the needs of the whole child and provide various forms of assessment. We are looking forward to a successful augmentation of these skills and acquisition of knowledge for every student.

WASHINGTON, D.C. TRIP SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED!
Our Class of 2013 completed a very successful trip to Washington D.C. Our days of learning were long, ...the miles we walked even longer! There were some tense moments with the "Boston Bombings" and uncertainty about the impact on our schedules. However, we proceeded safely and our students were able to maximize the learning outcomes by applying their prior knowledge, navigation skills, social skills, inquiry-based critical thinking and lots of fun while learning.

Calendar changes for June!

At the beginning of the school year, we indicated that we had scheduled 183 school days while needing only 180 student-contact days to fulfill our Diocesan commitment. This was done to allow for potential modification in case of unforeseen events, such as power outages like last year, etc.  We have come through this year without anticipated challenges. Therefore, we complete the 180 school days successfully by June 11th.

Please revise your calendar as follows:

Last day for students is Tuesday, June 11, 2013.
This will be a minimum day; Students will attend Parish Mass at 8:30 a.m. and the day will conclude with the Concert in the Falcon's Quad at 10:00 followed by our traditional promotion ceremony.
Last day for teachers is Friday, June 14, 2013.
This allows the teachers to complete their contractual obligations a few days earlier. We appreciate your flexibility and support, and look forward to seeing you for the Concert on June 11.   Click for letter calendar adjustments 2013 !
