Lunar New Year!
| |
Dear Parents and OLF Families,
On Monday, our Principal's Assembly focused on cultural enrichment related to the Lunar New Year. True to our Schoolwide Learning Expectations (SLEs), we are becoming more and more globally responsible citizens, by raising our own awareness of traditions and cultural events around the globe.
In China and Vietnam, the Lunar New Year marks the beginning of the new year in a 12 year cycle. The Year of the Snake began on Sunday of last week. Our Mandarin Chinese teacher, Mrs. Ding-Kemp elaborated on the traditions and importance of this celebration in Asia.
Students all received a red (or golden) envelope with a $1 bill inside. Children love the Lunar New Year because they can replenish their pocket money by showing respect to their elders. Children in China and Vietnam must demonstrate respect and courtesy to their parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, uncles and aunts before obtaining the red envelope!
At OLF this is the second year that we are able to share this beautiful tradition. We asked the children that they inform you of this event, and suggested that they put the dollar in their Rice Bowl for our Lenten offering.
Students were also happy to meet "Kevin" a young six grader who traveled from Shandong, China on his own to study in California over his Winter break. Kevin addressed the student assembly in perfect English, leaving many of our students speechless. He wished everyone a very happy New Year, and promised that he would be their tour guide, when any OLF students visit China!
Happy Year of the Snake!
Blessings,
Beate Nguyen, M.A. Ed
Principal

FINANCIAL AID APPLICATIONS!
|
Parents, please be sure to have your scholarship application in to F.A.S.T. if you are needing to request tuition assistance. Each family must apply each year that they are needing scholarship. The budgeting process has begun and knowing the amount of scholarship needed will help in determining what the school can afford for that purpose. F.A.S.T can be reached through our website. Go to the admissions tab and drop down to "scholarships". There is a link there to F.A.S.T. Follow the directions. Please DON'T WAIT to get this done. Mrs. Nguyen and our Scholarship Committee will be evaluating completed applications by the end of March. A completed application includes all supporting documents. If you have any questions that can't be answered by the F.A.S.T. parent hotline at 877-326-3278, contact Mrs. Clark in the school office.

| Jr. High School Deanery Dance |
OLF regained its reputation for holding a great Jr. High School Deanery Dance after a year of absence due to McGowan construction in 2012. This year the 8th Grade parents were helping to put this event together during a very busy month of January and February! A very special thank you goes to Sue Gibbs and Margaret Senske for the logistics support! Thank you to all the parent and faculty chaperons from OLF and the deanery! The Mardi Gras Glow Party was a great success and students from St. Edwards, Mission Basilica, St. Catherine's and OLF had a great time!

A uniform "Uniform Code"
|
 | | Student Council raises our standards! |
Our student government (OLF Student Council) and faculty have been working together to ensure that we raise our standards and expectations with regards to uniformity of uniforms. The main concern is that the expectations apply to all students equally and fairly. Therefore, last Monday at the assembly, the Student Council refreshed everyone's awareness on what, when and how to wear proper school uniforms. A small fashion show on McGowan stage helped everyone understand the expectations. It was announced that all students are given time to make the necessary adjustments for compliance until the end of Trimester II. Then, all students will need to comply.
