Learning community collaboration
Dear Parents and OLF Families,

Our school or Learning Community (LC) shares one school mission and unites all students, teachers, administrators, parents, parishioners and many community leaders.  The concept of a learning community is that each member is equally important to the process of initiatives, development, execution and completion of the goals that support the institution's mission.

The common thread that unites a strong LC is the desire to learn from each other. Together, we share information, tap into each others expertise and build success for all learners. All LC members commit to these essential components:
  • Respect for each member of the LC
  • Transparency of the work process
  • Open sharing of talents & resources
  • Collaboration and vision
The biggest threats to a successful LC are:
  • Fear of knowledge sharing
  • Restricted access to resources
  • Gossip or fragmentation of the community

The discovery that collective knowledge exceeds personal talents and individual capacity is a change of the paradigm of learning. Many of us grew up in an educational system in which you had the teacher and the student, the holder of knowledge and the one who needed to acquire knowledge through individual competition. This no longer applies in the digital age of information access and excess.

The LC places collective learning at the center of the community. It transforms the expert educator into a life-long learner who utilizes his or her professional training to guide and monitor the overall learning process within the LC.

The educator and students are not the only life-long learners! The other members of the LC are also learning through collaboration and dedication, since no parent, community leader or parishioner has all the answers! The old expectations we had for our students are shared among all members of the LC as Schoolwide Learning Expectations (SLEs).

At OLF, there has been tremendous growth in this area:

  • Our students demonstrate the working of the LCs inside and outside of school.  They work as teams on projects and authentic service learning opportunities.
  • Our teachers are applying the LC principles at OLF and are connected to various Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) online.
  • Our faculty and staff regularly exchange information and knowledge with their peers, students, parents and other experts.
  • As administrator, I am connected globally to a number of PLCs, enabling me to monitor educational trends and professional discussions for the benefit of our students.
  • Many of our professional parents belong to PLCs within their own field of expertise and bring this knowledge to OLF for application and implementation.
  • Through increased collaboration, community leaders and parishioners are sharing their contribution with our LC.

These are strong indicators that we are moving forward with a more progressive learning model for the 21st Century.  By modeling the LC to our students, we all demonstrate that collaboration is a rewarding and productive experience, both at the local and global level.

Blessings,
Beate Nguyen, M.A. Ed
