 Iowa Assessments & CogAT results
Dear Parents and OLF Families,

Yesterday, during a 60 minute presentation at our parent meeting, I focused on the correlation between Common Core Standards and the new Iowa/CogAT Assessments for Grades 2-8. These standardized tests are administered throughout the Diocese of Orange at the beginning of our school year. As one of many assessment tools, the Iowa/CogAT allows us to strategically guide instruction throughout the school year.

As with any standardized test, the results depict a "snapshot in time" of your child's cognitive abilities and academic performance. These assessments do not measure the full development of a multifaceted person or the growth of the "whole child." There are no indicators for artistic talent, sportsmanship, musical inclination, "social butterflies", leadership skills, etc.  Our students have many talents, gifts, interests and strengths which they demonstrate on a daily basis at home and at school. That's why we love them so much! They never cease to amaze and surprise us!

This year the Diocese of Orange used a new test format with newly updated norms that are more in line with the Common Core standards. A letter from Sally Todd, Associate Superintendent, accompanied the test scores and indicated some variations due to the new norms. This affects all Catholic schools who take this standardized test.

It is important to praise your child for his/her accomplishments and to talk to the teacher if you have concerns or questions. We would have preferred to deliver the results during Parent Conferences, but they were not ready as confirmed by the Diocese.

At last night's meeting, I encouraged you to talk to your child's teacher, and I offered  to sit down with you to look at individual scores. With our Student Success Teams (SST) we are able address the next steps in supporting your child in areas of growth and to challenge him/her in areas of strength.

We are partners in the education of our children. Please let us know how we can support you and your child, so that every student at OLF is nurtured, encouraged and empowered.

Blessings,
Beate Nguyen, M.A. Ed
