From the Director Welcome to the first issue of our electronic newsletter -- e-Connect. This is a supplement to our printed newsletter, Connect, which comes out 2-3 times a year. E-Connect will be issued about once a month and contain short topics of interest with links to more information. I hope you enjoy it!You'll read of another award in this issue. Paper Engineering Exhibition The Smithsonian Institution Libraries opened its new exhibition Paper Engineering: Fold, Pull, Pop and Turn in the National Museum of American History on June 14. The show features the art of paper engineering in the production of books with moving parts, such as peep shows, volvelles, accordion books and pop-up books, published from the 15th century to modern times. Also featured are two interactive videos and a series of lectures by paper engineers and collectors. The exhibition will be on display through fall 2011. Read More... |
"Copyright as Storytelling"On May 7, the Libraries hosted William F. Patry for a lecture titled Copyright as Storytelling. Patry is Senior Copyright Counsel at Google, Inc. and the author of a 7-volume treatise on U.S. copyright law entitled Patry on Copyright. View the entire webcast of the lecture. |
Biodiversity Heritage Library - BrazilLibraries staff Tom Garnett and Martin Kalfatovic were invited to attend the Workshop Coleção de Obras Raras Esencial (Workshop Essential Rare Works Collection in Biodiversity) in São Paulo, Brazil. The purpose of the workshop was to meet with partner libraries and technical staff that will be participating in a Brazilian-funded initiative to digitize library biodiversity collections. Read More...On June 27, the Association for Libraries, Collections, and Technical Services, a division of the American Library Association, presented the BHL partners with a citation for "Outstanding Collaboration" for BHL's noteworthy collaborative effort to fulfill a scholarly need by providing open access to a large corpus of historical materials on biodiversity within the biological, ecological and environmental sciences. |
