The Cost of Scanning One Page...
The Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL), in its global efforts to digitize biodiversity literature and make it freely available to the world, ensures that this precious knowledge is available to everyone, everywhere. The BHL currently provides access to over 42 million pages and over 87,000 images and is changing the face of research methodology. Scientists around the world are using BHL to identify and classify species, facilitate further scientific research, and support conservation efforts to prevent extinctions.

The BHL's substantial growth and activity has been supported by our dedicated patrons whose gifts we depend on to fund the digitization of additional literature, technical development for the program, and improvement of data curation. The below examples highlight ways a donation can make a meaningful and lasting impact:

  • $25 - Creates Flickr sets of our images which are popular with educators and artists
  • $50 - Promotes biodiversity education through social media, such as our blog
  • $100 - Scans 1,000 pages to be made available for free and open access
  • $250 - Helps us host marketing interns who circulate biodiversity content worldwide
  • $500 - Improves existing methodology and helps develop new tools for biodiversity research

We hope you will consider making a contribution to BHL by visiting our donation page here. Together, we can provide a better future for all biodiversity.

Up for Adoption: Elements of the philosophy of plants (Edinburgh, 1821)
Here's your chance to adopt Elements of the philosophy of plants by Augustin-Pyramus de Candolle and Kurt Sprengel. This is the first edition in English of a composite work by two of the most eminent botanists of the early 19th century. The first three parts on nomenclature, theory of classification, and descriptive botany are from a work by de Candolle, while the final part on the structure and nature of plants is by Sprengel.

When you participate in our Adopt-a-Book Program, you increase our ability to purchase essential new books and to preserve rare books and manuscripts used by researchers in the Smithsonian's 19 museums, 9 research centers, and the National Zoo, and around the world. To adopt Elements of the philosophy of plants, visit our website or call 202.633.2241.
Internships & Fellowships
Professional Development Internship Opportunities
The Smithsonian Libraries will offer three new, paid internships for the Professional Development Program in the summer of 2014. Candidates interested in advancement will work in the National Museum of Natural History on a gift-in-kind project as well as on events, appeals, publicity and Smithsonian Libraries Advisory Board activities. Candidates interested in digital projects will work remotely for the  Biodiversity Heritage Library's 15-consortium library network, addressing user feedback for bibliographic reference inquiries as well as cataloging and metadata issues. Candidates interested in preservation will work at the Book Conservation Lab in Landover, Md., receiving an overview of basic preservation needs and performing treatments for library collections. Applications for summer 2014 internships will be accepted on a rolling basis until March 21. For more information about both paid and unpaid internship opportunities, including application requirements, visit our website. To apply online, visit the Smithsonian's application system.
Research Opportunities 2015
Situated at the center of the world's largest museum complex, the Smithsonian Libraries is a vital part of the research, exhibition, and educational enterprise of the Smithsonian Institution. Each Smithsonian scholar engages in an individual voyage of discovery using the artifacts and specimens of the Smithsonian Institution in conjunction with the Libraries written and illustrated record of the past.
The Baird Society Resident Scholar and Dibner Library Resident Scholar Programs award stipends of $3,500 per month for up to six months to support scholarly research in the Special Collections of the Smithsonian Libraries in Washington, DC and New York, NY, in an extensive range of subject areas. The Margaret Henry Dabney Penick Resident Scholar Program supports scholarly research into the legacy of Patrick Henry and his political circle, the early political history of Virginia, the history of the American Revolution, founding era ideas and policy-making, as well as science, technology, and culture in colonial America and the Early National Period.  For further information about the Smithsonian Libraries' Resident Scholar Programs listed above, please visit our web site.
