Honor, Honorary: its exercise and meaning
An FB Share Photo by: Lucy De Simone  |   This little bird took the liberty of singing to herald the coming of Spring.  Perhaps God at that instance bestowed upon him the "honorary position" as the "Welcomer of Spring."

In our human society of professional, institutional, national, civic, social or religious endeavors, we always have a designated or elected leader who we call the president, mayor, CEO, pope, pastor, director, etc. However, these so-called headmasters have their hands tied behind their backs and cannot/will not function properly without assistants and or members to support them. As the saying goes " No man is an island."

In some organizational make-up, members are classified as active, associate and honorary. The first two membership status are self-explanatory. It is the word "honorary" that confuses some members of our community. Few of the people who were conferred with or received this merit of honor, think that they are above everybody else and act like kings and queens and can interfere with the lives and given responsibilities of others. I do not know why. Evidently, for lack of knowledge about the meaning of the word itself or just the basic principle of pride, self-ignorance or lack of self-respect. No pun intended here. According to the Mr. Webster and from most of our understanding, "honorary" is an honor and a privilege given to a person or persons deserving of esteem and respect without the normal duties. In other words, a person is accorded this "honorary status' as a token for his/her prominence in society or immense contribution for the advancement of the objectives of the awarding organization or institution, The "honoree" has nothing to do nor the right to interfere with the functions or inner workings of said group.

The Filipino Executive Council of Greater Philadelphia have active and inactive member organizations and no honorary. The president of the council deals with and takes care of everything as prescribed by its bylaws. She assigns committee chairs and members to help her around. She runs this umbrella organization accordingly without outside interference. Especially from people with honorary awards. No place for them here. Let the president do her job. Since its inception, FECGP have not recognized anyone with this "honorary" status but hopefully, will give this honor to a deserving individual or organization someday.

"Honorary" is a great word to behold, a privilege to be proud of and is once in a lifetime award that is fleeting and temporary. For those of you who have been given this prestigious honor, I say congratulations to you for a job well done. Enjoy the glory while it lasts but know your limits. Be humble.

Enjoy your weekend and keep yourselves warm!

Winter Sinulog a success!

This year's Winter Sinulog last Sunday, January 20 was full of jubilant devotees that came together to celebrate this annual tradition at the Basilica of the Santo Nino which is the Olde St. Augustine's Church. This event coincides with the traditional Sinulog which is also happening about that time in Cebu City, Philippines.  Olde St. Augustine's congregation will be celebrating the Summer Sinulog this August which was so designed because of the summer weather and the convergence into our city of visiting Sto. Nino devotees as they also tour the City of Brotherly love. Plan now to attend the Summer Sinulog in the 3rd week of August. Photo by: Philip Reyes

Leonardo Hidalgo, 78

By: BB Dacanay  We will always remember Leo, as we fondly called him. Always smiling he is usually quiet when he comes to attend our Sunday activities but inside him is a man burning with passion for his art.  Mr. Hidalgo is noted for his restoration work on ancient paintings inside the Olde St. Augustine's Church which took sometime to finish. Inspired by the master he always admired; Michaelangelo he would come early and go home late. Today the painting inside are resplendent of their glorious past as we gaze in awe and admiration at the beautiful sanctuary. Mr. Hidalgo made his mark in the University of Santo Tomas with the statue of St. Thomas in front of the main building. He has done a lot of other significant sculptures but true to his humble personality, he never bragged about it. We will always remember his soft voice and his quiet personality and his warm smiles. Indeed he even made a mark in our lives.

The Winter Sinulog once again proved the unending love and devotion of our people to the Sto. Nino. Going around and talking to so many people some of the from outside our area, it is very inspiring and takes us into a heightened feeling that our prayers will always be laid at the feet of our beloved Jesus. With the permanent home of the Sto. Nino housed within Olde St. Augustinine's; we give our thanks to the Augustinian Community for providing the support for so many years. Thank you Fr. Mike Slattery, O.S.A., for your leadership in the parish and for shepherding the Congregation.

(Photos by: Philip Reyes)  We said goodbye to two of our distinguished colleagues this week and extend our prayer and condolences (see obituary notice below) to the Hidalgo family and the Fontanilla family.  They will always be remembered. This month also marks the 1st death anniversary of Dr. Eusebio Nunez. We join his family in observing this very significant day where a pillar of our community passed away to the great beyond.
To all of you I thank you for your active participation and support to our many activities.
Maraming salamat sa inyong lahat. See you at our meeting this month!

Nomer Son  All drivers/chauffeurs of the period wear uniforms. Rosario Moreno's driver wears one in pre-war flick Tunay na Ina. What calls my attention is the fine brickwork on open steel frames with fancy ironwork on windows and clean cobblestones on driveway. That's a Chevrolet van and expensive De Hilo uniform.

Ocean City Coemback
After Sandy

Ocean City has made a remarkable comeback from Hurricane Sandy. The Boardwalk and Downtown are in good shape and we were able to accommodate 8,000 visitors during our New Year's Eve First Night Celebration.

Thanks to the tireless work of OCNJCARE, our super volunteer organization, its community partners and the City, this basic recovery was made possible. These groups continue to provide assistance to those who need help and will do so until the job is completed.
