I want to thank Monsignor McCarron and all those who came to Holy Cross to celebrate Ash Wednesday with us. Monsignor McCarron reminded us that Ash Wednesday begins the Christian season of Lent. We will spend the coming days journeying with Jesus toward the cross; toward the death that ultimately brings resurrection life. Many of us will spend these coming days practicing a new spiritual discipline or giving up something that seems to be getting in the way of the life we long to live. And on Ash Wednesday, we came together to mark the beginning of this Lenten journey.
We came together to acknowledge our sin, to acknowledge our mortality. We came to glimpse the Christ who offers forgiveness, who offers everlasting life.
As part of Wednesday's worship, the imposition of ashes was offered. This practice may not be familiar to everyone. Ashes have been used in Christian churches to mark the beginning of Lent since at least the 10th Century, and ashes are mentioned in scripture as a symbol of purification and repentance.
We offered the imposition of ashes as a physical reminder of our mortality and sin; an assurance of God's forgiveness and salvation.
During this Lenten season, let us focus our minds and hearts on God's presence with us.
In His Service,
Mary L. Sherry

ASBESTOS REPORT:
After extensive training by the Diocese and the state, Mr. Ron Farringer serves as our building inspector for asbestos.  A recent inspection in January shows we have no concerns regarding asbestos in the building.  We will continue to hold a thorough inspection every six months and report our status to the state and Diocese.  Reports are on file in Mr. Farringer's office for review at any time.

From Mrs. Main in the library

'HIT THE BOOKS' READING INCENTIVE: The Lynchburg Hillcats baseball team is sponsoring its annual "Hit the books" reading incentive whereby elementary students (and 6th grade) who complete a reading goal set by teachers and Mrs. Main will earn 2 tickets to a pre-designated Hillcats baseball game. (There are 5 choices of games) We will add other reward components and set guidelines to this program and will communicate those when we kick off the incentive on Wednesday, March 2 (birthday of beloved author Dr. Seuss). On that day, the Hillcats mascot "South Paw" will come to Holy Cross and present the incentive as well as read a baseball story to grades Pk-3. Stay tuned for details!
