Holy Cross Commemorates Pope's Visit to the U.S.
This week, Holy Cross School marked Pope Francis's visit to the United States with activities of learning and prayer.
"The Pope's visit to the United States is a teachable moment for all of us," said Principal Mary Sherry. "Pope Francis is a living example of someone who lives out his faith in the world on a daily basis. At Holy Cross, we speak to our students about the importance of being a person for others, for to whom much is given, much is required."
Director of Religious Education Kaky Bowden used strips of material and markers for a student activity revolving around Mary, the mother of Jesus. "The Holy Father loves the painting called 'Mary the Undoer of Knots,'" said Bowden. "The knots were created by tying strips of materials on which the children wrote their prayers. They wrote what is weighing heavily on their hearts that they want to tell Jesus about. We then tied them to each other in knots and prayed to Mary for her intercession to Jesus at the 'Rally Around the Pole' on Wednesday. Father Gallagher then took the knots with him to Washington in hopes to get them to Pope Francis."
Various other activities at Holy Cross Regional Catholic School this week included the fourth grade class making a timeline of the Pope's visit. High School Engl ish classes viewed one of his U.S. speeches online as a group and wrote reflections. School Chaplain Father Jim Gallagher will discuss his DC pilgrimage with our students at the all school Mass on Thursday, Oct 1 at 8:15 a.m. in the school gym.
Catholic Youth Day at Busch Gardens
Please join us on Saturday, October 3, 2015 for Youth Day at Busch Gardens. Known as an ongoing tradition in the Catholic Diocese of Richmond, the Catholic youth of our Diocese gather at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg to join in community and fellowship. The day includes admission to the park all day long, Sunday Vigil Mass, and dinner as a Diocese. Although the Office for Evangelization sponsors this event, it is open to all youth and families from across the Diocese. There is no age minimum or maximum. The cost ranges from $12 to $60 depending on the package you choose.
In an effort to reach our middle school youth, the Office for Evangelization offers Middle School Youth Rallies. The Middle School Youth Rally is a one-day diocesan gathering of middle school (grades 6-8) youth from across the Diocese of Richmond. This event is intended to be a high-energy day filled with opportunities to gather as a Catholic Diocesan community which will integrate fun and community building with the richness of our Catholic faith. The rally will be offered in two locations to be able to reach youth in all areas of the Diocese.
