VIDEO CONTEST

Our students are our best marketing tools.  In our efforts to continue to raise the visibility of Holy Cross School, we are launching a "Holy Cross Highlight" video contest.  Students and their families are encouraged to create one or more 30-60 second videos promoting the school and/or something special about it.  Be creative - the sky is the limit!  If you need inspiration, here are a few ideas:

  • Interview a student, teacher, parent, coach, priest, alumnus.  Ask them a question and have them phrase their response so that it is a statement.  For example, "Holy Cross is a special place...," "The teachers at Holy Cross are special because...," "I feel like I am getting a great education at Holy Cross because..." Spontaneous responses are best, but if you script your response, please don't read it (memorize).
  • Film one of our stellar teachers in action or a fellow student presenting in class.  You may want to introduce the clip as a reporter.
  • Catch a celebration or special moment - winning a game, getting a college acceptance letter, receiving a high mark on a test,... Use your imagination!

Deadline - videos are due by April 30, 2014.  Please submit to [email protected] with the videographer's name.

Prizes -

Elementary prize - $50 Gift certificate to Amazement Square

Middle/High School Prize - $50 gift certificate to Givens Books/Little Dickens

Selected videos will be set with an ending "board" that says our motto "What I am to be, I am now becoming...,"our logo and website.  While this promotion will be made easier with our Bring Your Own Device policy, the use of technical devices should not interfere with classroom time and teachers will use their discretion in ensuring that this doesn't happen.

Happy Filming!

Canned Food Drive
Elementary Student Government is sponsoring a canned food drive the week of April 17 - 11 for grades 3, 4 and 5.  All food will be donated to Holy Cross Catholic Church.  Thanks for supporting this Lenten service project.

Etiquette Dinner - "Best Manners Award" named after Saint Francis de Sales.

Saint Francis de Sales was born in 1567 and was famous among his contemporaries for his holiness, which was also expressed through good manners.  His biographies speak of Saint Francis as a perfect gentleman to everyone he met; whether they were noble, educated, or simple people.  He was a man who always had a smile for the people he spoke with, who treated everyone with kindness.  He himself summarized the importance of good manners in his own pastoral work, saying: "You attract more flies with a drop of honey than a barrel of vinegar."

Nominees:

6th Grade:

Rachel Williams and Andy Guglielmetti

7th Grade:

Elizabeth Grace Harvey and Alan Leal

8th Grade:

The Saint Francis de Sales Award was presented on March 8, 2014 to two young people who exemplify his characteristics.

New Email Addresses for Faculty and Staff

Our faculty and staff now have new email addresses.  You can still

use the "old" email addresses @hcrs-va.org   or you may use the new ones, which are "1st initial last [email protected]"     Example:  Jane Smith would be [email protected]. You do not have to make any changes in your address book if you want to continue to use the old addresses.

Key Club News:

---Hopefully you saw us on WSET News the other day for National PB&J Day!!!  It was so much fun having the kids filmed, and I had my 10 seconds of fame when I was interviewed.
---We plan to make sandwiches again after school on Tuesday, April 8th, and we need bread!  Please consider sending in a loaf or two of 100% wheat bread. If you would rather send in a donation of a gift card for either Kroger or Food Lion to help us buy bread, that would be wonderful, too!
---We are having a hard time getting volunteers to help make sandwiches the last week or two, since we have so many students in sports and the school play.  If you can spare an hour on Tuesday to help, we would love to put you to work!  Let me know if you can join us!

Sacrifices Can  Change Lives

Christ gave us everlasting life through his death and Resurrection on Easter Sunday. As Easter approaches, we too, are called to give life to our most vulnerable brothers and sisters.

When you give alms to CRS Rice Bowl, you live in imitation of Christ by serving the poor and vulnerable in a concrete, life-saving way.

Help NJHS honor Jesus' call to serve the world's poor and give to your CRS Rice Bowl today.

Rice Bowls are due April 25th.  Mrs. St. Angelo will collect 8th -12th bowls for their "Hunger Games" Class Competition with the class raising the most money winning Ice Cream!! Ms.  Bowden will collect 6th and Mr. Roach 7th grade.  All donations will be given to the Catholic Relief Service.  NJHS thanks you for your participation.

News from Mrs. Main in the library

Holy Cross School students are underway in the "Hit the books" reading incentive  program sponsored by the Lynchburg Hillcats baseball team! Last week, some Hillcats representatives came to visit and kick off the program! Here is how it works:

Each time a student reads a book (or 50 pages grades 3-5) the parent will initial a base on the bookmark.

When all 4 bases are completed (homerun!) the parent signs the bookmark and the student turns it in to Mrs. Main.

Students will be given 2 tickets to a special "school night" at the Lynchburg Hillcats baseball game on May 23rd, complete with fireworks!  Bookmarks are due May 21st!

Because the game is on the night of Mrs. Shenigo's play, we will have alternate prizes for those that can't attend that night.

Contact Mrs. Main if you have questions!  [email protected]   434-847-5436
