Holy Cross Jr. FIRST LEGO League Team is Recruiting!

Jr. FIRST LEGO League (Jr. FLL) season is starting in the Lynchburg Region!  This year, the theme defined by national Jr. FLL is "Disaster Blaster." Teams will explore the awe-inspiring storms, quakes, waves and more that we call natural disasters. The Region 2000 Jr. FLL Expo event is scheduled for April 19, 2014 at Liberty Christian Academy.

Jr. FLL is open to youth 6-8 years of age.  The recommended number of participants on a team is 2-6 participants.  This is a great STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) program that complements our FIRST LEGO League team that competes in the fall.

If your child is interested in participating, please contact Cat Mosley at mosley_c@hcrs-va.org. There are a number of scholarships available to teams, so the sooner the better!

The Junior National Honor Society and the Elementary Student Government collected 346 canned goods for the food pantry at Holy Cross Church. Thanks for providing food for those in Lynchburg.

Applebee's Dining to Donate Continues Jan. 15 & 22
The Applebee's restaurant at 3219 Old Forest Road has invited HCRS to"enjoy a meal that's filling - and fulfilling" again this year through itsDining to Donate promotion.  Last year, our school ran one of its most successful school promotions.  We realize we offer these opportunities to our families a lot, but if you are already planning on dining out, please
consider Applebee's on the designated nights of Jan. 15 or 22. Applebee's requests you bring in the  flyer for easier record-keeping.  Download a copy of the flyer below.  Thanks to the six families that participated this past week!

News from Mrs. Main in the library media center:

Accelerated Reader News: ***** We are excited to announce that Mrs. Hickey's 1st graders started the A.R. program on this past Friday and wow what a terrific start!! They did awesome!! We are so proud of their reading achievements in first grade!!

For those who aren't familiar with the program, Accelerated Reader entails students reading books on our Holy Cross A.R. list, and then taking a short comprehension quiz on the computer. Points are awarded based on the length and difficulty of the book, as well as the number of questions answered correctly.

Here at Holy Cross, we use this program mainly as a reading incentive, but sometimes teachers use it as a classroom project such as a book reading incentive. Students in grades 2-5 were invited to a special Christmas "Accelerated Reader store" just before our break to spend their accumulated points! The store will open again in early February & June.

Read Across America/ Sylvan Learning Center incentive:

Once again, Holy Cross School is invited to participate in the February reading incentive sponsored by Sylvan Learning Center in conjunction with the National Education Association's Read Across America. Details will be forthcoming in the next E-Crossette and logs will be sent home as well. This is the only reading "contest" that we participate in all year. Sylvan is a generous donor of gift cards and a chance to win a bicycle for the highest reader in each class, grades 2-5. Pre-K through 1st grade will also record reading for February as we will have our own "in house" incentive!!
