News From Holy Cross Regional Catholic School
June 30, 2013

Dear Families,

I hope you are enjoying your summer!  Our office staff is busy at work closing out the 2012-13 school year and ready to launch the 2013-14 school year.  Please note that our summer office hours are 9-3; the office will be closed on

July 4 and 5 for the holiday.  We are looking forward to an exciting new school year with our returning families as well as the new energy that will be added from our new families, including our international students.  Please be sure to share with your friends the incredible school we have and invite them to consider it for their children as well!  As always, I thank you for making a commitment to Holy Cross School and for sharing your children with us.  Each is a true blessing!

Happy summer,

Patti Culbreth

Host a Chinese or Korean Student for the 2013-14 School Year

We are currently working with a Chinese exchange agency that has several students in the 9th and 10th grade interested in attending Holy Cross.  These students are male and female and host families will receive a $700/month stipend.  We also have an 11th grade Korean girl seeking a host family.   If you're interested, please contact Amy Lawson as soon as possible.

8th Grade Celebration!

On Friday evening, June 7th, our 8th grade students and their families joined together at St. Thomas More Church to share a liturgy of celebration.  Msgr. Michael McCarron and Fr. Jim Gallagher presided at the mass that was coordinated by the 8th grade students and their Religion teacher, Ms. Kaky Bowden.  The Holy Cross community shared a wonderful evening highlighting our 8th grade students, and our principal, Mrs. Patti Culbreth, distributed certificates to our 8th grade students.  After mass, the celebration continued in the church hall with dessert while those in attendance watched a wonderful power point presentation that highlighted the journey of our 8th graders.  Congratulations to our 8th grade students on their culmination of middle school!

Middle School & High School Students,
Thinking about next year and how to stay on top of your assignments?  Use a planner/agenda to track your assignments!  All middle and high school students should purchase a planner/agenda for next fall.

Next year we will have a limited supply of agendas/planners for sale at Back to School Night for $5.00.  You may purchase one at that time or purchase one for yourself while you do your other back-to-school shopping at Target, Office Max, Staples, etc.

Plan to be a planner!  Start the new school year with an agenda.

Summer reading

Summer is flying by and I hope you are having the best time with all of your activities. We are about to begin week 4 of our summer reading program "Read around the world". There are 7 weeks left to complete your goal. If you have lost your information/log, there are extras in the HC office. Just a reminder of the specifics for your grade:

PK-2nd grade- Read 21 books. Color in a continent on the map for each 3 books read.

Grades 3-5- Read 350 pages. Color in a continent for each 50 pages read.

We will celebrate our summer reading with an "International Day" on Friday, Sept. 6th. I am looking for parents/grandparents and all who would like to help with our celebration day! Contact Mrs. Main if you can help that day, or provide a refreshment item! [email protected]

If you do any traveling this summer, please send a postcard to the school in care of Mrs. Main. We will make a display of all of the cities you have traveled to "Around the world". Tell us what you're doing, what you're reading!

Volunteers needed

We will be looking for volunteers in the elementary library next year to help with book check in, re-shelving, assisting with A.R. quizzes and other miscellaneous duties. If you would like to put in an hour a week, an hour a month, or any amount of time, contact Mrs. Main! We offer free training! Hours are flexible!! [email protected] The library is a fun place to be!!

Sports Physicals

Any Holy Cross student wishing to play a fall sport (volleyball or soccer) this academic year must have a viable sports physical on file in the school's athletic office before they can practice or compete in a regular-season game. It would also be a good opportunity to pay the Gaels' athletic fee ($100.00).  No physical from last year counts towards this year's participation.  Avoid "the August rush" where all area athletes will be trying to get physicals for their respective schools.

Volleyball practice at Holy Cross will begin on Monday, July 29. Soccer practice begins Monday, August 5.

If you have any questions call the school or see Mr. Mitchell.
