ANNOUNCING RETIREMENT PLANS FOR CLOYD AND SCHEMMEL
With bittersweet emotions, we announce the retirement at the end of this school year of two of our most seasoned and talented teachers, Mr. Bill Cloyd and Mrs. Sherry Schemmel. These teachers are legends, and we celebrate the years of service they have given to our families. We know they deserve time to relax with family and friends and to pursue their many interests, but we find it hard to let them go!
Bill Cloyd has devoted 39 years of teaching excellence to Holy Cross after joining our faculty in 1974. Mr. Cloyd attended VMI and served in the US Army before entering the field of education. He began at Holy Cross as a Guidance Counselor but soon accepted the responsibilities of teaching English 11 and English 12. Several years later, Mr. Cloyd added US History, AP US History, AP US Government and AP English Literature to his class load; his AP students regularly score high on the annual AP exam due to his careful preparation. Mr. Cloyd also served as the Forensics Coach for more than 30 years and his students won accolades across the state due to his guidance. He and his wife, Dawn, have two daughters, Margaret and Elizabeth, and six grandchildren. Bill looks forward to having time to travel and time to spend with his grandchildren in his retirement years.
Sherry Schemmel has been part of the foundation of our elementary program for the past 26 years, joining our faculty after enrolling her own children here. Sherry's love for her faith, her vocation and her "seconds" is enormous. If you have not been "Schemmelized" then you have not visited her classroom. Sherry attended parochial schools from K through graduate school and believes strongly in the value of a Catholic school education - the 4 Rs (reading, writing, arithmetic and religion). Sherry will tell you that the favorite part of her day is sharing Jesus with her students. We have all enjoyed her yearly production of America is Born as well as her continuous leadership in Young Authors, cards for those in need, planning of liturgies, liturgical dances and numerous community outreach programs. Mrs. Schemmel lives Jesus' teaching to "love one another." She has been a powerful influence on generations. Sherry and her husband, Dick, have three children and eight (soon to be nine) grandchildren. She deserves some time to focus on family.
With mixed emotions we announce these retirements.
Bill and Sherry represent what is best in education and what is best about Holy Cross. We will miss them daily next year, but we wish them much peace and prosperity as they venture into the next exciting phase of their lives.

Lynchburg Symphony Performance
We are excited to have the Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra Quartet joining us at Holy Cross on Friday, April 19th. The quartet will be performing for our students at 2:00. All elementary and middle school students will be attending the performance. We will be going over proper concert etiquette during music classes this week to be sure that our guests feel appreciated and welcome!HEALTHY CHOICES SERIES Last year we began a Healthy Choices Speaker Series to address issues of concern for our students and families. This year we kicked off the series with a chastity speaker, Mr. Chris Stefanick, to our high school students in the fall; Mr. Stefanick highlighted healthy choices in relationships. We will conclude our Healthy Choices Series this year with two final speakers: - Wednesday, April 24 at 6:30 pm in the cafeteria: Student Empowerment! Mr. Doug Washington will hold a seminar on empowering students to talk to their peers about appropriate behaviors and boundaries. Mr. Washington will review the school's policy on anti-bullying and hold a dialog with parents about empowering young people to be their own best advocates. Parents and students of all grade levels are invited.
- Thursday, April 25 at 2:00 pm in the gym: High school students will gather to hear Dr. Linda Hancock, Director of VCU's Wellness Resource Center, discuss the dangers of "molecules that monkey with your mind" - an anti-drug and anti-drinking program for our students on the eve of prom. This program is geared to students as the audience.

Twelfth Annual Hurley Mission Workweek
The twelfth Annual Lynchburg Catholic Faith Community Appalachian Workweek, sponsored by St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and Holy Cross Regional Catholic School, will take place the week of June 10 - 14, 2013. This is a wonderful opportunity for middle school students, high school students, and adults to respond to our call to service.
We will spend a week in Hurley, Virginia, located in the mountains of southwest Virginia. Hurley is a former coal mining community that has suffered economic loss as a result of many mine closings. Unemployment is widespread and there is an increasing rate of disability among the former mine workers from mining related illnesses such as black lung and emphysema. Poverty is a way of life but the community's spirits remain high.
Many of the homes are in terrible condition as a result of the poverty, general neglect, and harsh winters. Some of the projects we may be involved in include roof repair and replacement, drywall installation, floor replacement, house painting, plumbing, window replacement and deck building. Participants will have the opportunity to learn home repair skills, problem solving and how to cooperate as a team.
Each year, as we prepare to leave our new friends, there are smiles, laughter, hugs, and tears. However, we leave knowing we have made someone's life a bit better for our efforts and knowing that our faith has grown by sharing our lives with our brothers and sisters in Hurley.
Important
1. Age Requirement: In order to provide a safe and meaningful experience, a student must be a rising 9th grader to participate without a parent accompanying them. Rising 7th and 8th graders may participate if they are accompanied by a parent or responsible adult.
2. Parents/Adults Needed: We need adults to help supervise the teens. We also need volunteers to lead work teams in home repair projects. The number of students that may participate will depend on the number of team leaders we have. We may need additional drivers to transport participants to and from Hurley.
