ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT: Due to our special Teacher/Parent Conference Schedule on November 2, we will not hold the Adoration on Friday, November 2.  We will resume our plans to hold an adoration each month beginning again in December.

Reminder:  School will be closed on Friday, November 2 for Parent/Teacher Conferences.

Volunteers Needed!

This is a reminder that our fall festival and chili cook-off are next Saturday, November 3 from noon to 4 pm.  Make plans now to attend this special event featuring awesome food and drinks, children's activities, and live music by The Imposters.  We are still in need of volunteers to help during this event.  Even if you are able to help for just an hour we would greatly appreciate it!  Please email Patti Culbreth at culbreth_p@hcrs-va.org  if you can help.

Parents, you should have received an email last week from the Richmond diocesan office that gave you a link to a parent survey.  We would appreciate it if you take the time to complete this online survey.  It relates to our diocesan accreditation and we need your input!  If you need to have the link re-sent to you please contact the office.  Thanks!!

First Grade News
First graders will be singing Halloween songs
to the residents at The Odd Fellows Home on Halloween morning!
They will wear their fun costumes to help celebrate Halloween with them.

Each week first grade had a classroom visitor.
On the first week of October a pumpkin said to me,
"I am a jack-o-lantern!"
There have been ghosts, monsters, and a skeleton.  BOO!

IT'S TURKEY TIME AGAIN!
For the 9th consecutive year, Holy Cross School will be participating in "Operation Turkey" to help feed the needy and homeless in the Lynchburg area during the holidays and all year long.  Please consider donating a fresh or frozen turkey.  Turkeys will be collected in the front parking lot after school on November 14th and delivered to our local soup kitchen, Daily Bread.  Collection boxes will also be located in each classroom if you or your child wish to make a monetary donation.  As always, thank you for your generosity.  We look forward to helping many people this year.

Consider hosting an exchange student January through June 2013

EF Foundation for Foreign Study, an exchange agency we work with often, has several students interested in attending Holy Cross in January who are currently seeking host families.  The students are from Austria and Germany, male and female, and are all sophomores.  If you're interested in hosting a student, please contact Amy Lawson atlawson_a@hcrs-va.org.

If you're interested in learning more about what it takes to host a student, please contact Amy and she can put you in touch with several families at Holy Cross School who have served as hosts and can share their experience with you.

Dual Enrollment Biology is conducting a Field Ornithology Project.
The goals are to appreciate the biodiversity right here on our campus and connect field biology with topical discussions in lectures.  For example, current lectures are on meiosis and while in the field we discussed how the sex chromosomes in birds are the reverse of that of humans: females are XY and males are XX, so the female egg determines the sex off the offspring.  Thus far we have documented the occurrence of 29 bird species on our campus.  We wanted to share the list (in the order we found them) and hopefully spread some enthusiasm for the project.

Carolina Chickadee, Carolina Wren, Eastern Bluebird, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Tufted Titmouse, White-breasted Nuthatch, Mourning Dove, Red-bellied Woodpecker,  Turkey Vulture, American Crow, Eastern Wood-Pewee, Cedar Waxwing, Red-tailed Hawk, Black Vulture, Rock Pigeon, American Robin, American Goldfinch, Blue Jay, Eastern Phoebe, Killdeer, Northern Mockingbird,  Pileated Woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker, Chimney Swift,  European Starling, House Sparrow,  Northern Cardinal, Northern Flicker, and Yellow-bellied Sapsucker
