The Biggest Jersey Shore Boat Sale & Expo Delivers Results

Photographed by Reily Imagery

The 6th Annual Jersey Shore Boat Sale & Expo was held September 19th - 21st at FirstEnergy Park, home of the Lakewood BlueClaws.  The show is produced by the MTA/NJ and again featured new and pre-owned boats, engines and accessories for sale. The 2014 Jersey Shore Boat Sale & Expo was sponsored by PineBelt Enterprises, Inc. and Travelers Ocean Marine Insurance.

The show has grown in size every year since being founded in 2009.  This year's show featured over 300 new and pre-owned boats in over 130,000 square feet making this year the largest show to date.  Attendance was up over last year as the show continues to attract serious buyers and those that know what a great venue it is to find what they are looking for.

Survey results from exhibitors were extremely positive with an ever increasing number of new leads and sales reported, as well as strong follow up after the show.

"The 2014 Jersey Shore Boat Sale and Expo was again a successful venue for us at New Jersey Outboards," stated Barry Costanzo, General Manager. "The show continues to grow in size year after year. The MTA/NJ continues to put on an affordable show for both the dealers as well as the general public with inexpensive admission fees and free parking. Year after year the MTA/NJ does an outstanding job in preparing and marketing the show and this year was no exception. It is one boat show we will be a part of for years to come. Thanks again for everything you all do at the MTA/NJ to make the show a success for everyone!"

John DeBona of The Fisherman Magazine added, "This show has taken on an unstoppable forward momentum. The quality of attendance has greatly improved with each passing year,"

The Jersey Shore Boat Sale & Expo is held every September at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood, NJ. Additional information about this show and the New Jersey Boat Sale & Expo, also produced by the MTA/NJ, can be found by visiting JerseyBoatExpo.com

In 2014, the MTA/NJ established the MTA/NJ Family Scholarship. This new scholarship is open to all members' children and their employees and can be applied to any higher education program.  In addition to the MTA/NJ Family Scholarship, the Education Foundation also helps our members with reimbursement for various training and certifications to help grow their workforce and businesses.  This money goes directly to support our members. The MTA/NJ greatly appreciates everyone's support and participation at this year's event.

2014 Marine Shoot Off
November 3, 2014, Red Wing Sporting Clays, Port Republic

Tune up your marksmanship with a round of sporting clays at Red Wing Sporting Clays Facility in Port Republic, New Jersey at the Seventh Annual MTA/NJ Marine Shoot Off. This annual event for the Association will be Monday, November 3, 2014 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.

Proceeds from the event will go to support the MTA/NJ PAC, which is a non-partisan, non-profit, political action committee formed to raise voluntary contributions to use in supporting candidates for state and local elective offices who share boating concerns and are committed to supporting the recreational boating businesses. Thanks to the generosity of our members and successful fundraising efforts, the MTA/NJ has been able to stop, move and pass legislation; has significantly increased awareness of the importance of boating to the state and the economy; and expanded our list of key contacts, which have spawned positive results for the industry as a whole.

The event is open to novice and experienced shooters. Teams of four will compete on a sporting clay course. This year we have expanded the format and will be shooting 75 targets. The MTA/NJ will place anyone who does not have a team of four into a group the day of shooting. Following the competition, a barbecue lunch will be served along with awards for the best team and best shooter.
Guns, ear plugs, glasses are available for anyone that needs them. Shells will also be available for purchase or you can bring your own. The cost per person is $65.00, not including the cost for shells.

Anyone that is unable to attend the event can still make a contribution to the MTA/NJ PAC Fund by mailing a check payable to MTA/NJ PAC to 2516 Highway 35, Suite 201, Manasquan, NJ 08736.

Life Jacket Type Code Labels Go Away
Step Towards Eliminating Confusion and Introduction of New Designs

In a move that's expected to benefit recreational boaters, on Oct. 22 the US Coast Guard will drop the current life jacket type code scheme -- Type I, II, III, IV and V -- that has been used for years to label and differentiate the types of life jackets and their specific use. Chris Edmonston, BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety President and Chairman of the National Safe Boating Council, said, "The boating safety community believes this move by the Coast Guard will help lead the way toward more comfortable and innovative life jacket designs, help boaters stay on the right side of the law, lower costs, and save lives."

Explains Edmonston, "This is positive news. This type coding was unique to the United States, tended to confuse boaters, limited choice and increased the cost of life jackets." He says removing the type coding is a first step toward the adoption of new standards that will eventually simplify life jacket requirements for recreational boaters.

Reminder: $2.1 Million Grant Program to Assist Small Fishing Businesses with Sandy-Related Costs & Damages

The Christie Administration announced on Tuesday, September 30th that the DEP is making more than $2 million in grants available to certain fishing-related businesses that were affected by Hurricane Sandy. Owners of bait-and-tackle shops, commercial dealers, commercial fisherman, for-hire party and charter boat operators, marinas and those involved in shell-fishing and aquaculture may apply to the DEP for grants of  up to $10,000 each to help offset some of the costs of the storm on their operations.  The deadline to apply is October 31, 2014.

Please Note: The DEP has confirmed that if a business received a grant from the EDA but still have an unmet need, they are still eligible for this program.  Having received grants, insurance, etc. from another program would not exclude anyone from applying and being eligible.  The DEP would just need to know if the business applied, if funds were received and how much. If a need still exists, the DEP needs to confirm that there is no duplication of benefits.
