New Hours at the Library!
We are adjusting our hours. Beginning June 1st the library will open at 9:00am Monday-Saturday. The library will be closing at 8:30pm Monday - Thursday.
Friday and Saturday closing times are unchanged.
NEW HOURS
Monday - Thursday: 9:00am - 8:30pm
Friday and Saturday: 9:00am - 5:00pm
Saturday (July 11th - August 29th): 9:00am - 1:00pm 
Library Closed
The library will be CLOSED, Friday, April 3rd for Good Friday.
We are OPEN Saturday, April 4th from 9:30am - 5:00pm

Friends of the Library Spring Book Sale

Our Spring book sale is April 30 - May 3, 2015. 

Hardcover and paperback books for every interest will be offered. All of the books have been donated within the last six months. We have an amazing collection of cookbooks and craft books. Parents, teachers, and youth group leaders, we have a large collection of books for children. Music lovers, for the first time we have a large collection of music CDs. We also have a good selection of large print books and our popular "Vintage Books". You may find that out-of-print book you've been looking for! Prices range from 50 cents to $2.00. Payment is by cash or check. We will be open for the first time on Sunday, May 3rd  from noon - 3:00pm for our close out "Fill a Bag" sale. 

 

Preview Night: Wednesday, April 29th. Members only.

(You may purchase a membership at the door that evening.)

For the Sake of Country: Female Spies during the Civil War

Monday, March 30th at 7:00pm  

When you think of the role women played during the Civil War, what do you think of? Do you think of laundresses, homemakers, or nurses? Would you ever think of spies?

Female spies played an essential and critical role in shaping the political, military, and social landscape. They changed the course of military battles, political intrigue, and even saved a president! Learn about four extraordinary Union and Confederate spies who risked all for the sake of their country.  Registration required. 

 

Connecticut Forest and Park Association: Its Trails, History & Events

Tuesday, March 31st at 7:00pm  

Join us as we dive into the dynamic history of the Connecticut Forest & Park Association (CFPA), Connecticut oldest conservation organization. Learn more about the 825-miles of Blue-Blazed Hiking Trails and the different programs CFPA has to offer. CFPA's Events and Volunteer Coordinator, Elizabeth Fossett, will also discuss ways to become involved.  

This program is sponsored by the Cheshire Planning Department and the Cheshire Public Library, and funded by the Friends of the Cheshire Public Library.

 

Ask a Lawyer

Thursday, April 2nd from 6:00pm - 7:30pm in the Moss Room (upper level) 

As a free service to the community, the New Haven County Bar Association provides participants with general legal information during a free 10-15 minute consultation.  If the participant requires additional assistance, they are referred to the Lawyer Referral Service for a referral to a LRS attorney or social service agency.
Navigating Your Financial Landscape: The Basics

When you're in college or have recently landed your first real job, it may seem like owning a home, paying for your future children's college, and retirement may seem like distant concepts - but it's never too early to start planning for your financial future. You'll learn all about 401k basics, saving versus investing, different types of investments, building and maintaining credit, and lending options.  

Presented by Jonathon Dibble of Morgan Stanley.


Where to Hike in Cheshire

This program will introduce hiking opportunities located in Cheshire.  From meadows to Connecticut's second largest waterfall, Cheshire has over 1,500 acres ready for exploration.  Free hiking maps, property descriptions and directions will be available.  The town website, a valuable resource for open space information, will be highlighted.

Edible Insects
with the Stamford Museum and Nature Center
Thursday, April 16th at 6:00pm. Discover the who, what, where and why behind eating bugs. From roasted tarantula, to mealworm spaghetti we'll find out why people have been eating insects and invertebrates for hundreds of years. We'll meet some live bugs that might be on a menu somewhere as well as some animals that eat bugs. Participants will also have a change to try an edible snack, if desired, at the end of the program. Ages 5 & up.

 

Sinatra and Me

Tuesday, April 21st at 7:00pm

An intimate look at the legendary Frank Sinatra by one of his closest friends Tony Consiglio, as told to Franz Douskey. Join Pulitzer Prize-nominated writer Douskey as he discusses his book Sinatra and Me: The Very Good Years. Registration required. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library.  

 

Skype Video Chat with Friends and Family

Saturday April 25th from 10:00am - 1:00pm 

Here is your chance to "visit" that person who lives too far away to just drop in on! A member of the Rotary eClub of the Southwest will stop by the Cheshire Public Library to sit with you as you make a Skype video call from his computer to the computer of a friend or family member. The webcams and microphones on both computers will let you see and hear each other--almost like sitting in the same room together! Sign up slots will be 30 minutes in duration. Please note: You will need the Skype username of the person you are contacting in order to participate.

Kimberly White, Children's Librarian; Kathleen Larkin, Reference Librarian; and Emily Versteeg, Library Technology Coordinator.  We're very impressed with their credentials, energy and professionalism, and we look forward to working with them for many years to come!
Friends President Wins Award
Fellis Jordan, president of the Friends of the Library, has won a Special Support of the Cheshire Community Award, presented by the Cheshire Chamber of Commerce. She also received an Official Citation from the State of Connecticut and a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition in honor of her award. The library sends its congratulations to Fellis and thanks for everything she has done for us over the years!

Have You Lost Something at the Library?
The library's Lost & Found box is overflowing! Jackets, backpacks, scarves, sweaters, and more have been piling up all winter. If you think you have lost something, please stop by and take a look in our Lost & Found box. It is located in the lobby near the audiobooks. You can also ask any library staff member and they can show you where it is. Anything left in the box past mid-April will be donated.
