Weekend Concert Series
Sunday, March 1st at 3:00pm

"I Love a Piano" with Paul Bisaccia

Local audience favorite Paul Bisaccia will return to Cheshire with a new concert, "I Love a Piano," featuring  classic composers such as Chopin, Debussy, Satie and Paderewski, as well as popular composers, including Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Scott Joplin and Marvin Hamlisch.  Popular both as a performer and teacher, Paul has been featured on three television specials seen by millions and has toured on four continents. This concert is free and open to the public. No registration required. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

75th Anniversary Reception: Cheshire Rotary Club

Thursday, March 5th at 6:30PM 

During the evening you will have an opportunity learn more about Cheshire Rotary including viewing a video presentation of recent Rotary activities supporting the Cheshire community, viewing scrap books documenting Cheshire Rotary's activities throughout the years and conversing with Rotarians about the rewarding opportunities to serve our community and world through Rotary activities. Tickets for the upcoming Annual Pancake Breakfast will also be on sale.

At 7:00 p.m. we have a brief program:

  • *Rotary District Officer will speak about Rotary International and Rotary's

    accomplishments throughout the world.

  • *Cheshire Rotary President, David Schumacher, will talk about the ways

    Cheshire Rotary has impacted Cheshire throughout the years.

  • *Ramona Burkey, Library Director, will talk about the Cheshire

    Rotary/Cheshire Library throughout the years as well as the newest partnership "iPads for Education" providing opportunities for math and reading literacy for children.

After the program, we'll celebrate with cake for all.  This event is free and open to the public; no registration is required.  For all ages. 

Tea Rex
Monday, March 9th at 6:00pm
Enjoy a dinosaur-themed storytime with craft followed by a tea party. Juice and refreshments will be served. Children are encouraged to dress up for the tea party.
Registration required.
For children ages 3-7 years old.

Downton Abbey: Fashion and Social Change

Wednesday, March 11th at 7:00pm

A fun and informative look at the fashion of the early 20th century, the setting of the popular drama "Downton Abbey." We'll explore how social, technological, and political changes influenced fashion during the course of the show. Attendees are welcome to bring their own clothing items from the early 20th century for sharing and discussion. Presented by Susan Jerome, Collections Manager for the Historic Textile and Costume Collection at the University of Rhode Island. 

The Power Within, Part 2

Thursday, March 12th at 7:00pm

Learn how your thoughts affect you physically, mentally and emotionally and about energy flow and the impact it has on your health, coordination, mental clarity and other vital aspects to your sense of well-being. Spring IS Coming! Gardening & Hiking Programs

Grow Your Own Meadow  

Tuesday, March 3rd at 7:00pm

Join landscape designer Kathy Connolly for a one-hour discussion on the establishment, care and feeding of a flowering meadow. This program is funded by the Friends of the Cheshire Public Library, and sponsored by the Cheshire Public Library and the Cheshire Planning Department. 
Take a Hike!

Tuesday, March 10th at 7:00pm.

Sometimes referred to as the area's best kept secret, the Regional Water Authority owns 27,000 acres of land in south central Connecticut, some of which is open for recreational activities with a Regional Water Authority Recreation Permit. Visitors may hike, jog, cross-country ski or just meander along more than 60 miles of trails through Regional Water Authority watershed lands. This program is sponsored by Cheshire Public Library and the Cheshire Planning Department. 

Creating the Non-Stop Garden

Monday, March 23rd at 7:00pm

A nonstop garden doesn't mean nonstop work. Lower maintenance is just one of the many benefits of four-season gardening. I this lecture, horticulturist Jennifer Benner will outline the benefits of creating a nonstop garden. This program is sponsored by the Cheshire Planning Department and the Cheshire Public Library, and is funded by the Friends of the Cheshire Public Library.

Connecticut Forest and Park Association: Its Trails, History & Events 

Tuesday, March 31st at 7:00pm

Join us as we dive into the dynamic history of the Connecticut Forest & Park Association (CFPA), Connecticut oldest conservation organization. Learn more about the 825-miles of Blue-Blazed Hiking Trails and the different programs CFPA has to offer. CFPA's Events and Volunteer Coordinator, Elizabeth Fossett, will also discuss ways to become involved. This program is sponsored by the Cheshire Planning Department and the Cheshire Public Library, and funded by the Friends of the Cheshire Public Library.

Fab Film Saturdays: BIG HERO 6

Saturday, March 7th at 2:00PM. With all the heart and humor audiences expect from Walt Disney Animation Studios, BIG HERO 6 is an action-packed comedy adventure that introduces Baymax, a lovable, personal companion robot, who forms a special bond with robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada.No registration required.

 

Dads & Donuts

Saturday, March 14th at 10:00am

Dads & Donuts is a storytime designed especially for dads and children ages 3 and up. You don't have to be a dad either.  Moms, grandparents, or partners - everyone is welcome to attend and eat delicious donuts.  Snacks will follow stories based around the theme of Animals! Enjoy stories with donuts, juice and coloring and crafts to follow. 

 

Stoyteller Sara deBeer presents Tales of Deep-Rooted Magic
Saturday, March 14th at 2:00PM
. "Tales of Deep-Rooted Magic" contains stories from cultures around the world, and tales of the magic which waits for those who venture into the woods, into the wilds, and into the deep, dark, forest. No registration required.

Local Author Talk: America, Freedom and Enlightenment
Saturday, March 21st at 2:00PM. Cheshire author John White discusses his new book, "America, Freedom and Enlightenment: An Open Letter to Americans About Patriotism and Global Society." REGISTRATION REQUIRED.   
Edible Book Festival

Saturday, March 28th at 10:00am  

What exactly is the Edible Book Festival? It's a chance for patrons of all ages to test their creativity and combine their love of both books and food in fun displays that will be viewed by both a panel of judges and the public. The only rules are that entries must be based on a book (any book will do!) and they must be composed of edible items. We'll be accepting entries in three age-group categories:

  • Child (up to age 12)
  • Teen (ages 13-19)
  • Adult (ages 20+)

Registration will open on February 1st and will need to be done in-person at the Children's desk at the library so that we can make sure all participants receive a packet of information for the event. For any questions, contact Children's Librarian Nicole Dolat (203-272-2245 | [email protected]).

Phoenix Performing Art Troupe

Sunday, March 8th at 2:00PM. Come enjoy this Hartford-based troupe as they perform a variety of Chinese classical and traditional dances, and teach about Chinese arts and culture. No registration required.  

The Theory of Everything 
Sunday, March 15th at 2:00PM. The film is based on the memoir Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen, by Jane Hawking. It has received 5 nominations for this year's Oscars.  No registration required. 2 hours and 3 minutes. PG-13 (for some thematic elements and suggestive material)

Author Talk: John Katz 
Sunday, March 22nd at 2:00PM. New York Times bestselling author Jon Katz (A Dog Year, A Good Dog, Rose In a Storm) will speak about his newest book, a memoir called Saving Simon: How a Rescue Donkey Taught Me the Meaning of Compassion. Jon Katz has become well-known for rescuing "irredeemable" animals.  In 2011, state police notified him of a severely neglected donkey who needed attention.  It was at that time that Simon entered his life and changed it forever.  Hear more about Simon's story of healing, Mr. Katz's writing experiences, and much more.REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED.
 

"Irish Music In America" with Atwater-Donnelly Band

 Sunday, March 29th at 3:00PM. The award-winning band Atwater-Donnelly will present a unique blend of traditional American and Celtic folk music and dance on the mountain dulcimer, banjo, tin whistle, guitar, mandolin, harmonica and more.  For this very special performance, Aubrey and Elwood will be joined by John and Heidi Cerrigione on upright bass and autoharp, and Irish step-dancer Kevin Doyle. This concert is free and open to the public. No registration required. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library.
For the Sake of Country: Female Spies in the Civil War

Monday, March 30th at 7:00pm

When you think of the role women played during the Civil War, what do you think of? Do you think of laundresses, homemakers, or nurses? Would you ever think of spies?

Female spies played an essential and critical role in shaping the political, military, and social landscape. They changed the course of military battles, political intrigue, and even saved a president! Learn about four extraordinary Union and Confederate spies who risked all for the sake of their country.  

 

Friends Corner

The Friends need more children's books for the booksale! Clean out those bookshelves and closets and donate your children's outgrown and gently-used books, DVDs and CDs to the Friends of the Library. All of the proceeds from the sale of the books are used to pay for library programs and museum passes.

 

Friends of the Library Book Sale Wednesday April 29-Sunday May 3

Mark your calendars for the Spring Friends of the Library Book sale! For the first time the book sale hours will run through Sunday for even more shopping opportunities. The always-popular bag sale will be on Sunday only. For $10, shoppers will be able to fill a brown paper grocery bag with books and other sale materials. Any additional bags are only $5!
