Girl Scout Troop Gives Back to Our Community!

Three girl scout troops were represented from Fairmont, troop 2160, 2654 & 2908.  There were 9 children in all who went to Yorba Regional Park to participate in the Coastal Clean-Up efforts.  Aanya M., Anjani B., Emma R., Sam & Griffin D., Myra F. and Madison & Delaney R. all woke up early Saturday morning and joined in to pick-up trash throughout the park and surrounding area.  The kids were surprised at how much trash there was and to see how many other volunteers showed up to clean up the trash.  It was a great learning experience for everyone!

Meet One of Our New Teachers!
Lisa Rapp - Seventh and Eighth Grade English
Educational Background:
I earned my undergraduate degree at San Diego State University, and I had the very good fortune to study abroad for a year, in Madrid, Spain. I earned my teaching credential at UC Irvine. I have B-CLAD (bilingual) certification with my multiple subject credential, and I also have a single subject English authorization.
Work experience: I have taught 6th, 7th and 8th grade core, which is a three-period block that includes reading, language arts, and social studies. I find teaching most inspiring and rewarding when I see students' confidence grow, and when students offer unique, original, or insightful ideas that connect what they're learning to their personal experience or observations.
Hobbies, special interests: I love to learn new things, and I have many interests. I enjoy visiting museums of all types, gardening, watching baseball, and running. I've done a little fly-fishing, and I taught myself to quilt when my children were young. I also built a chicken coop to house school-hatched chickens after my daughter's science class incubated them. I'm pretty handy around the house and yard! It's probably not surprising that I enjoy reading. I'm especially drawn to memoirs and coming-of-age novels such as A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and Where the Red Fern Grows. I like to learn about foreign lands and cultures as well. When I was a child, my family traveled a region of the US each summer, and this fueled my interest and curiosity about other places. I have had the good fortune to travel to Egypt, Greece, Italy, and Spain; someday, I'd like to hike the Inca Trail to see the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sofia in Istanbul. I'd also like to visit as many US presidential libraries as possible, or drive coast-to-coast on secondary or two-lane roads.
What motivated you to become a teacher? I always thought about being a teacher, but it wasn't until my own children were in elementary and middle school that I actually earned my teaching credential. Earning my credential while working and also raising a family was challenging and exhausting; but I was inspired to work at it by my younger sister's efforts to beat leukemia. I also had some fantastic teachers growing up. I especially remember my high school physics teacher, Mr. Fitz, who was the most creative and imaginative teacher I've ever known.
What do you love most about teaching? I love working with children. I love the energy and enthusiasm of children, and it's exciting to know that it's their job to discover the world. Teaching keeps me anchored to that part of myself that continues to discover and learn. It is a privilege to learn with my students, and also to see the world through their eyes.
Any additional responsibilities you've performed in a school environment. At previous schools, I coached Academic Pentathlon and soccer, and I taught the yearbook class, which was a lot of fun.
