Welcome Back from Ms. Lowe

Dear Parents,

The school year is off to a great start!  It has been such a pleasure to see the many happy faces around campus as students are greeting their friends and getting settled in their new classrooms.

To best meet our students' academic needs with regard to the Accelerated Reader program, we implemented a flex time library schedule and facilitated a process that will help the classroom teachers better support students' goals.  This flex time allows students to check out books and take Accelerated Reader quizzes throughout the school day.  In an effort to support the transition, we have extended Library hours, and will provide time for A.R testing in the computer lab in the morning from 7:45 -8:05.  We will not have testing time available in the afternoon; however, the Library will be open late on Thursdays so that students may pick new AR books for the weekend.  As of Monday, August 26, the new library hours will be:

Monday               7:45am - 2:45pm

Tuesday              7:45am - 2:45pm

Wednesday         7:45am - 2:45pm

Thursday             7:45am - 3:45pm

Friday                  7:45am - 2:45pm

Thank you for your partnership as we work to provide an excellent educational experience for your child.  Please look forward to a letter to follow next week with additional information regarding the start of the school year.

Sincerely,

  Michelle Lowe Signature

Meet One of Our New Teachers!

Mr. Alexis Clark - Fourth Grade

Al ClarkEducational Background: I received my B.A. in Sociology from California State University Long Beach and my multiple subject teaching credential from California State University Dominguez Hills. I have also received advanced literacy training from U.C. Riverside and advanced mathematics training from Fresno Pacific University.

Work experience: My teaching experience includes teaching sixth grade for 11 years and first grade for three years. In 2008-2009, I was chosen as the South Whittier School District's Teacher of the Year and a top 25 Teacher of the Year for Los Angeles County.

Hobbies, special interests: I have an extensive list of hobbies and interests, but I especially enjoy visiting museums, reading, traveling, hiking, fishing, golfing, cooking, and trying new recipes. I am also a passionate fan of the Angels and Anaheim Ducks.

What motivated you to become a teacher? Coming from a family of educators, ranging from elementary school teachers to college professors, was certainly a motivating factor in choosing teaching as a profession. However, the greatest motivating factor that led me to a career in is being able to guide young people toward success.

Any additional responsibilities you've performed in a school environment. My past experiences include serving as master teacher to student, new teacher trainer, grade level chairperson, school site science coordinator, student council advisor, curriculum council member, and track and field coach.

What do you love most about teaching? The greatest joy I receive from teaching comes from sharing my passion for learning with my students. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing children excited by learning, mastering concepts, gaining confidence, and thinking.
