The Trump Crackdown Begins
Donald Trump's new Muslim ban has finally arrived. The President issued his latest attempt to stop immigration from six majority-Muslim nations to the United States Monday, one month after the original version was blocked by a federal court. The ban goes into effect on March 16. It also leaves in place a 120 day-long freeze of the federal refugee program. The new ban allows current visa holders into the country, no longer includes Iraq, does away with an indefinite restriction on Syrian refugees settling in the US, and scraps a provision that would have given priority to refugees who belong to religious minorities (AKA Christians). And unlike the earlier version of the Muslim ban, it explicitly excludes green card holders. According to the Trump administration, all these changes make the new ban stronger in court - and keep us safe - all at the same time. Others aren't so certain. -Thom (What do you think? The man born kind and compassionate can have that disposition crushed down out of sight by embittering experience; but if it were an organ the postmortem would find it in his corpse." - Mark Twain. |
