The DO's and DON'T's of hardwood floors:
-
DON'T
use wax or oil soaps to clean your polyurethane-finished floors. This will affect your ability to recoat/refinish down the road.
- DO use cleaners that won't leave a film or residue. Recommendation - Bona Hardwood Cleaner.
- DON'T use acidic cleaners, as they will dull the finish/luster of your hardwood. Yes, this includes your water and vinegar!
- DO clean up spills as quickly as possible.
- DON'T wet mop, STEAM or use an excessive amount of water to clean your floors. A damp, soft cloth or sponge is fine. Water causes your hardwood to swell and can cause permanent damage with too much exposure.
- DO invest in area rugs, flannel or felt pads for the legs of furniture. This protects your floors from unnecessary scratches, scuffing and dents.
- DON'T roll or drag furniture across hardwood floors!
- DO invest in window treatments or tinted windows. Hardwood is photosensitive, just like our skin! Exposure to sunlight can cause fading or irreversible color change.
- DON'T let stiletto heel be a fashion statement at your home. This is a hardwood floor's worst enemy!
- DO trim your pet's nails regularly.
