In business since 1979, C & L Laser Cutting of Great Britain supplies a huge range of 3mm (.12") thick acrylic shapes, discs, clock faces and tokens.

Back in 2012, the company purchased a Direct Jet 1024UV to accurately place required prints on acrylic material prior to laser cutting the individual pieces. "Accuracy was one of the key features for us," says Cliff Smith, Director.

More than small runs or small-batch custom items, C & L Laser Cutting consistently fulfills large volume orders. "At the time of our research and testing, this machine had the best print quality that I could find, and it was quicker than other models we looked at," Smith says. "That speed helps us considerably on large-volume jobs."

Additionally, C & L Laser Cutting is no different than many of DCS's customers in that they quickly realized that they can use their Direct Jet UV LED printer for many more applications than they originally thought. "We originally bought the machine to increase our range of colour clock dials and get away from screen printing," Smith says. The UVMVP series of printers can now digitally produce ADA/Braille signage that mirrors the look of the photopolymer process.

The standard method of producing an ADA/Braille sign with a Direct Jet UV LED printer completely covers the raised text in one color – including the top and the sides. This new capability allows users to not only produce a flatter font, but to only add color to the top of the raised text.

Familiarity within the Industry

The multi-step, time-consuming photopolymer method is very familiar to current producers and purchasers of ADA/Braille signage. They are familiar with the flatter fonts and coloring only the tops of the letters. It is a process and a look that they know, understand and sometimes require.

Now it's possible to match this look with a UV LED printer from DCS.

Since the enactment of Title 24, California has had its own set of standards for Braille signs. Specifically, the state has unique requirements for Braille dot and cell spacing. These measurements are incorporated into the 2010 ADA/ABA Guidelines.

The ADA module within Color Byte has the ability to produce California Grade 2 ADA/Braille Signage.
