Teachers and students love First Note!

Growing the Program

Your gift enables us to offer the First Note program to many more underserved students. CMF entered 2014 with all participating schools located in Washington State. As of today First Note is in use in 29 states and 2 countries.

The program is predominantly being used by schools, though day care centers, Boys and Girls Clubs, YMCAs, and others find First Note a valuable tool for use not only during the school day but after school and during the summer.

Thank You John Rudolf Family Foundation

Once again this year, the John Rudolf Family Foundation has made a generous gift to the Children's Music Foundation. CMF is fortunate to have so many generous donors providing the gifts that enable us to offer First Note to many of our under-resourced schools.

Teachers Corner

Here's a message from Erin Jacob, a teacher at Meadow Crest Early Learning Center in Renton, WA:

I did a little presentation of the program to all of our teachers this morning and everyone was very excited about it. Some of the things that they love is that you incorporated the multicultural lessons, it doesn't require much effort from them, and it doesn't take up a lot of time considering we only have our students for 2 1/2 hours a day, 4 days a week. Thank you very much for helping our teachers incorporate music in our classrooms!  We really appreciate it!  Have a great weekend!

From Amy Spence in Anchorage Alaska:

"My kids are really enjoying the program. The banjo was one of their favorites. The Frankie dance is also a hit. The sectioning of the lessons in video format is great for their small attention span. We're having fun!"

Teachers Prefer Online Professional Development

In a recent survey conducted by ASCD's Ed Pulse, teachers were asked what they would like to see in online videos when used as part of PD? 78.54% said that they wanted to see examples of other teachers in the classroom. CMF has created videos that show our own Rachel Brackett in her classroom demonstrating various First Note lessons.   Check them out (CLICK HERE)!

 High School Senior Writes Article

Caroline Schagrin, a senior at Souhegan High School in Nashua, New Hampshire, conducted a research study of her own evaluating First Note as part of a class project. She spent time interviewing the teacher and observed the young students in class. Among her discoveries, Caroline concludes, "aside from the learning, music can affect children in poverty in a personal and emotional way as well. Adequate music education will affect children in poverty to overcome their struggles by making something worthwhile from music while at the same time increase cognitive development. It is essential that as a community, we work to help school districts fund their music programs and look for new ways to incorporate music into the classroom." (read more).
