CMF Welcomes Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Wyoming

The Old Schoolhouse in Wilson, Wyoming, is home to The Pumpkin Patch Preschool

One of the newest schools to add First Note to their curriculum is the Pumpkin Patch Preschool in Teton County, Wyoming. Teton County (population 20,002) serves as the southern gateway to two national parks: Yellowstone and Grand Teton. Originally populated by several Native American tribes, the valley was visited during the return journey of the Lewis & Clark expedition and became a prime location for fur trappers and mountain men in the early 1800s. Wilson, on the west side of Teton County, is home to the Old Schoolhouse, vacated by the county school district in 1999. Rather than see the historic log building demolished, a group of concerned citizens formed a non-profit organization and worked with the county to save the schoolhouse. The non-profit organization managed the school as a community center and home for several small businesses. The Wyoming Business Council funded the restoration that now hosts more than 13,000 local and tourist visits annually.

A Teachers Story

Here's a message from Jessie Gilbert, a teacher at Cesar A. Batalla School in Bridgeport, CT:

We are LOVING the program so far! It is so easy for me, as a teacher, to implement and the kids are always so engaged! We just finished the second lesson and the students are recalling the lessons and the word of the week. They also love the songs! I frequently hear them singing or humming "Dinah" or "Engine, Engine".

  Sammy and Frankie

One of the biggest impacts I have seen is with my behavior/special needs student. He really loves the lessons and is able to participate and focus for most of it, which is a huge accomplishment for him. One thing that really surprised me was his ability to control himself with the rhythm sticks. At first I was very nervous about giving him the sticks, because generally he would use them to hit another student or throw them across the room. However, I took some extra time on the "rest position" instructions and he was able to maintain self-control and wait for the sound to begin using the sticks. He also can remember most of the chants and songs which is a great accomplishment for him! We are so excited to continue using the program! I can tell it will make a wonderful impact with my students!

CMF to Present at ISME!

Data was collected last year to measure the impact of First Note on both students and their teachers. A research paper (summary) was prepared, and CMF has been selected to present these findings at the International Society of Music Educators (ISME) Conference in Brazil later this year. ISME is a worldwide organization that seeks to celebrate the diverse ways that people engage with, and develop in and through, music. Founded in 1953, ISME represents an international, interdisciplinary, intercultural network of professionals who strive to understand and promote music learning across the lifespan. The organization shares a commitment to culture, education, conservation and the durable development of our cultural heritage, and to evidence-based policy and practice.
