YMCA and Boys & Girls Club to Offer First Note

The YMCA Heatherwood childcare Center (pictured below) has adopted First NoteThe YMCA offers financial assistance to those who qualify. The center serves children 6 weeks-6 years old. Infants (6 weeks-12 months), Woddlers (12 months-2 years) Toddlers (2 years- 3 years), Preschool (3 years- 4 years), Pre-Kindergarten (4 years-5 years) and both AM and PM Kindergartners (5 years-6 years).

The Boys and Girls Club of Bellevue will also be offering First Note in their Great Futures preschool class!

These classes offer a loving, secure environment for a child's first preschool experience. The successful separation from parents and the development of a positive bond with the teachers are primary goals of these classes. The classroom environment will be structured to foster the development of the child's communication and social skills.

Thank You Lucky 7 Foundation!

Once again, the Lucky 7 Foundation has provided CMF with a generous grant that will provide local schools and childcare centers with the gift of the First Note music curriculum. Manson and Frances Backus created "Lucky Seven" with the hope of giving back and improving the community where they lived and prospered for so many years. Since 1996, the Lucky 7 Foundation has provided grants to nonprofit organizations, including but not limited to, those that benefit health, welfare, education, arts, and the environment.

New Schools Experience First Note

Rose Hill Elementary in the Lake Washington School District has just adopted the First Note music curriculum along with Sun Valley Elementary in Sunnyside, Washington. The thing that really stands out about Sun Valley is that the entire school is made up of Kindergartners -- more than 500 of them -- where nearly 100% of the students qualify for free or reduced price lunch.

A teacher at Sun Valley writes "I used it right when I received it and it has already helped my students, and me as well."

Eduardo Mendona

Eduardo Mendona has joined the First Note team as a composition advisor as we begin to develop year 2 of the program.

Eduardo, a former high school principal, is a guitarist, percussionist, singer, composer and director of "Show Brazil!"

He traces his heritage to a royal African family called "Mama Beka," meaning "Prophet of the Royal Court." He settled in Seattle, Washington in 1994 and was a member of the percussion ensemble, Bakra Bata, before forming his own band and production company, Show Brazil. His group performs and offers workshops all over the Pacific Northwest, including Bumbershoot, the Northwest Folk Life Festival, the Seattle International Children's Festival, and many others.

Eduardo Mendona provided a musical welcome to Pope John Paul II when the pontiff visited Brazil in 1980. He also played for Nelson Mandela's visit to Seattle in 1999. Mendona was featured in Paul Simon's 1991 documentary, "Born at the Right Time." In 2007, he was named Outstanding Brazilian Male Singer Based in the United States. We' re fortunate to have such talent on our team!

Welcome A"board" Gary Wenet

Gary Wenet, Ph.D. is the most recent addition to the CMF Board of Directors.  This is a second tour of duty for Gary, as he was a huge factor in helping us fund and build the First Note music program that is being enjoyed by so many of our youngest learners today. With a 25-year career advising executives from privately and publicly held companies and with a doctorate in psychology, Gary brings a breadth and depth of experience in the formation and development of high performance management teams and facilitation of large organizational change.

Gary coauthored the book, Leadership as a Habit of Mind (Amacom, 2000), and has served on the teaching and training faculty at the University of Washington and on the faculty of American Management Association. He has had long standing relationships with companies as diverse as RealNetworks, Amazon, Chiron Corporation, Yellow Mountain Stoneworks, Novartis, FibroGen, Snohomish County P.U.D., and Todd Pacific Shipyards.

Lastly, Gary is an avid music lover with a personal passion for children, and enjoys seeing them experience themselves and others through music and the arts. Glad to have you back!
