Introduction To Scratchboard Art (Ages 16 and Over)

Scratchboard is a clay coated board covered by a thin layer of black ink. An image is revealed by scratching away the ink to expose the white clay. Students will be provided with three 5"X7" Ampersand boards plus scratching tools. Students will first learn basic scratching techniques (lines, cross-hatching, feathering, etc.) using one of the boards for practice. They will also learn how to re-ink and re-scratch the boards to develop image depth. Students will then create an original design of a feather for themselves.  They will learn how to transfer the image to the board and learn how to develop shadow and light. Students will need to complete the board at home. The instructor will be available later to review the final image and offer suggestions.

The Springfield Township Fire Department kicks off National Fire Prevention week by hosting a Fire Prevention Open House at the Civic Center, located at 9150 Winton Road.  The purpose of the Open House is to educate the public about fire safety and to provide an opportunity to see fire apparatus and other emergency equipment in action. New this year, we have added demonstrations and vehicles from the Service & Police Departments.

The event includes fire and emergency equipment demonstrations, household fire extinguishing demonstrations, K-9 demonstrations hands on activities for the kids, guided tours of the fire station, and interactive displays. Kids will be able to jump aboard the fire trucks and have an up close look at the rescue vehicles of today and even one from the past! Children will have an opportunity to try on firefighting gear and go through the safe house which teaches them how to exit a smoke-filled house. Playhouse in the Park, Off-The-Hill Production

Fake Flowers Don't Die

More information

The Playhouse in The Park Series continues with a partnership between the Springfield Township Arts and Enrichment Council, The Wyoming Fine Arts Center and Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, with additional support from a Target Community Arts Programming Grant.

Playhouse in the Park is a professional regional theater company committed to producing and presenting for diverse audiences the broadest range of theater. Their mission is accomplished through works of the highest caliber produced on stage and through their outreach programs. This year we are pleased to host "Fake Flowers Don't Die" by John Yearley. This world premiere play tells the story of three students who discover a magic lamp that may or may not grant the finder three wishes. While it's easy to think of wishes such as piles of money or a winning Cincinnati Reds winning season, it's not so easy to prioritize deeper issues that may involve an ill relative, a sibling with disabilities or a new step parent. These friends must negotiate shifting friendships and growing responsibilities as they step up to the challenge they face.  Admission is FREE. Registration is not necessary.
