One member's Inspiring Journey

At 85 days clean, I can say that, B"H, there have been many improvements in my home and in my Shalom Bayis. I am posting daily on the forum, and I call in to the GYE phone conferences. My wife definitely enjoys my personality better. I'm using the computer strictly for business, not even to see the news. It brings me a sense of calm. And when I go out into the street, I just don't look - PERIOD.

I can't describe to you what miracles and mofsim are happening to me! Two major developments happened recently that gave me a lot of Nachas.

I used to work in Rabbanus, but, unfortunately, I left after a spat with the board of directors. Now out of the blue, they made a meeting and called me to say, "Listen, we are sorry for what happened between us. We ask for your mechila". I replied, "Listen guys, you really acted unjustly but... I forgive you and will pray for your wellness". They are even considering to compensate me. So Hashem gave me agmas nefesh from them, but now he brought back a bit of my lost honor - and some added parnassa too!

The same with my wife. Before my sobriety, when she wasn't busy attacking me she was so bitter that she was indifferent even to death! Two days ago she wrote me a note, "You are a magician for all the changes that are happening in our home".

Who? Me? What did I do? Nobody knows that my secret is GYE. It is there that I learned about what addiction does to a person and what is the secret of recovery: Let G.od run His world as HE SEES fit. Let Him be the Supreme King! Be a bit humble, accept His Rule over all that happens to you. How can we get angry or impatient or have complaints?

Part 2.

Some recovery thoughts:

I know from experience that reaching 90 days is a beautiful accomplishment... but that's all, folks. For long-term sobriety we need to always remember that yesterday is gone, tomorrow has not come, and only today is up to me.

It's all in the mind, in the wiring of the circuits. In order to recover, we need to develop a degree of maturity that we did not posses before. People with Celiac disease are told that they are allergic to wheat. They need to live their entire lives on spelt bread and they accept it, that's all. It's the same with the disease of lust addiction. I must avoid lust for life (of course, one day at a time).

I can see how easy it is to fall, even if you have a lucrative trajectory of YEARS of sobriety. Dynamite is dynamite, and it will always be dynamite. It can sit in a warehouse for 20 years, but if you put it in contact with fire it will explode. So has Hashem forsaken us by giving us this disease? "No, my son", He replies, "but you are DYNAMITE! So just make sure to stay away from fire. If you do that, you can be sober until 120 years". But if we don't watch out for fire, dynamite will make a BOOM, it's just a law of chemistry (and in our case, biology).

GYE is the place where I became wise - street-wise. I used to think that the street belonged to me, that it was made for my entertainment. But thanks to GYE I came to the realization that everything, even the street, belongs to Hashem. Hashem gives me what belongs to me. All the rest is His. HE and only HE is the KING, and we are His servants.

Part 3.

What does G-d ask of us?

The following thought came to me in a moment of inspiration: Hashem has but one request : מה השם אלקיך שואל מעמך- What is it that Hashem your G.od wants from you? כי אם ליראה- He wants only your eyesight. That is all He is asking. And if you do that, then the rest of the pasuk will be easy to accomplish: ללכת בכל דרכיו- you will go in all His Ways, ולאהבה אותו- the Love for Him will be kindled in your heart, ולעבד את השם אלקיך- you will serve only Him, בכל לבבך ובכל נפשך - you will find out that you do have a heart and a soul and you will love them because you will see that they are pure and wholesome. You will keep all His Mitzvos, and you will see that they were all given to you for your good. Just one thing, chevrah, WATCH YOUR EYES - and all the goodness of the world will start pouring on you!

Thank You, GYE, for being a (spiritual) "eye opener", and thank you, friends, for all the posts that helped me in my journey. May Hashem grant you all that your heart desires and more!

Really from the bottom of my heart to you all!

G.od Bless GYE and Am Yisrael,

Arye

What Will You Do?

The excerpt below is based on an address given by the Lubavitcher Rebbe in November 1959 to a group of wealthy Jewish leaders on how we ought to respond to the "flood" of the Holocaust that exterminated a third of the Jewish people.
We can apply this message in the aftermath of our own destruction at the hands of addiction and other self-destructing behavior:

In our own lives we often observe people whose lives have been destroyed by a "flood," in one form or another. Our question at such a time must always be: How do I rebuild a broken heart? How can I ignite a tortured soul? How can I help a survivor? How do I bring more light into a dark world? How do I increase acts of goodness and kindness? What new mitzvah can I undertake to heal the world? How do I extend myself to be there for another person?

What can I do to change my corner of the world and make it a more moral and holy place?

What will I do today and tomorrow to move our aching planet one step closer to redemption?
