If It's Impossible -There Might Be Hope
Dear friend,
Do you think you are an addict? In other words, are you beaten? I am. I'm an addict who is sober today for a bunch of years, and there are many others like me (even many frum ones) who will gladly meet with you on the phone, or, better, in person, to freely and openly share their recovery with you. It all depends on what you are willing to do for your recovery - and if you really feel you 'have had enough' already. I have had enough, b"H, and it sounds like you may have, too. All my love for my wife and innocent children will not stop me from horrifically screwing my life up. You seem to see the same thing, and are shocked. I'm not. I am an addict. Only I can give up the useless breath-holding-in-the-face-of-temptation and finally reach for the company of other addicts so that I can get the help I need from Hashem. Nu. It's very, very hard. It's actually impossible. If you see it that way, then I say there is - possibly for the very first time - hope that you might finally start to get better, by Hashem's Chessed, as many others have. Who really needs G-d at all, if they have power? Give up on the breath-holding struggle, but not on yourself! You have a life; your wife has a husband; and your children have a father. There is help for you to still save those things.

The Gift of Slow-briety
In 12 Step recovery, it's common to wish newcomers a "gift of slow-briety". The idea is that tangible recovery and sobriety is only achieved by painstaking daily effort, and no real change can take place overnight. This little poem illustrates this point.
If you want your dream to be,
Build it slow and surely.
Small beginnings - greater ends.
Heartfelt work grows purely.
Submit your poetry.

We Lusted and Wanted to Be Lusted After...
By Asher S.
For me, Shmiras Ainayim goes to the core of my addiction. I am not only addicted to lust and being lusted after, I'm also addicted to being "liked" by everyone. "People pleasing" for me has never been an asset; however, I've lied to myself that it will help my career, lead to promotions, and help me network for new jobs.
The reality is that people like my unguarded-honest-vulnerable-self more than my phony smile. Now at work I don't say "hi" to women before they say "hi" to me. Instead, I look away, and I find that women aren't seeking me out! Likewise, when I see a woman on the street, a complete stranger, I no longer smile and say "hi". And you know what? These women keep walking by. Their lives are not shattered by my "rudeness". These women don't "need" me. What a shock!
I used to think I was the center of the universe, and everyone, especially women, liked me. This flawed thinking is the gateway to the next escalation - lust. I spent hours fretting over these desires and what did it get me? My wife is now paranoid that I flirt at work! I've come to realize that just by looking I'm hurting both parties: the women (who are created in Hashem's image) and me.
But with this new attitude, I feel free and serene. It's a win-win: women are no longer being lusted after and objectified by me, and I can focus on my recovery and serenity. Of course there are tools to avoid looking, but the number one tool is praying to Hashem for freedom from this compulsive temptation. One day at a time.
