Earth Day and environmental stewardship on the path out of poverty
HAPPY EARTH DAY! Celebrated every year on April 22, Earth Day is the world's largest environmental event.

In this issue we shine a light on the critical interdependence that people living in poverty have with their environment, and how even minor changes can affect their ability to feed their families and make a living. Marginalized women and youth experience an even greater vulnerability to the impacts of environmental events such as climate change.

Managing that interdependence well can produce longer more sustainable benefits for people and their environment. A good example is CCA's recent experience in Colombia helping small holder farmers and their co-operatives earn greater income by employing good agricultural practices and tapping into international markets.

In becoming export ready farmers were trained to adopt conservation agricultural practices that help them meet internationally recognized Sanitary and PhytoSanitary (SPS) standards and requirements for exporting crops and food products across borders.
CTARTA training session Colombia
A farmer training session on environmental practices is held in Colombia.
The result was a win-win situation for the farmers and for the sustainability of their farms. In just one year, farmers are now using organic fertilizers and protecting water sources with vegetation that prevents soil damage and erosion, disposing of chemical containers correctly. When using chemicals, farmers are applying only recommended doses on their crops and handling chemicals correctly with safety equipment. They report fewer health complaints and cleaner water sources.
CATRTA training
Technical assistance provided during the project helped equip Colombian farmers with safer farming techniques.
Blanca Otilia Poveda, a farmer in Saboya says the training has already boosted her income, "Before getting trained I didn't know how to use pesticides properly and used too much, so I lost money. Now I know how to apply and handle the pesticides better, production is better and the berries are ready to be picked on time."

Farmers are closer now to becoming SPS-compliant and are better equipped to reach new markets outside Colombia.

For CCA, addressing these environmental realities and supporting awareness and change within our programs is essential to the success and sustainability of our work.
