International Women's Day
|
The Canadian Co-operative Association (CCA) has a lot to celebrate this International Women's Day (IDW). Each year on March 8, the United Nations and women's organizations around the world advocate the rights of women and celebrate their social, political and economic achievements. This year's theme is "Pledge for Parity."CCA has long championed the equal participation of women in co-operatives in Canada and internationally. We work with women co-op members who are farmers, credit union professionals, small business entrepreneurs and co-op leaders within their communities. From gender model families in Ghana to the first ever in-depth study of women's co-operatives in Turkey, gender is an important cross-cutting theme in all our projects. We advocate equity at work and in the home, as well as gender training (including masculinity) for all co-op members. Did you know that CCA has:
- A full time Gender Specialist on staff
- An online gender module created for training volunteers and staff
- Partners who have strong gender advocacy mandates
- Interns working specifically on gender with Partners
- Gender assessments done within all projects

Click to listen to Patience Ayumba (Gender Program Officer FOSTERING Project Ghana) talk about gender issues in Northern Ghana and how the FOSTERING Project is working to address these.
|
We celebrate the people, our partners and staff, who strive to promote gender equality within our projects. Such as Patience Ayumba (above), the Gender Program Officer in the FOSTERING project in northern Ghana, who is working tirelessly to help women co-op members and farmers become confident leaders who are well represented across co-operatives in the region. Watch her speak about her work in the short video above.
The Women's Mentorship Program (WMP) is one of CCA's flagship programs. Every year women from across Africa and Asia come to Canada to be mentored and return to mentor other women in their home communities.

Celebrating 10 years of gender
Since the first gender audit of our projects in 2006 and now, ten years later, we are on our way to fully institutionalizing gender equality.
This is something CCA thinks is worth celebrating on International Women's Day.
