The theme of this year's Co-op Week (October 13-19), A Better Way, was chosen by a national committee of co-op and credit union communicators. It spreads the message that co-operatives offer a better way to do business, and that they build a better Canada and a better world.
In order to help co-ops build a better world, why not host a
Co-op Week FUNdraising activity to raise funds for the
Co-operative Development Foundation of Canada (CDF)?
CDF is a registered charitable organization. It raises money to help alleviate poverty by building and strengthening co-ops in developing countries. Working with the Canadian Co-operative Association (CCA) and other partners, it helps poor communities fight poverty and create more secure lives through community-owned co-operative enterprises.
Some Co-op Week fundraising ideas include:
- Community BBQ, bake sale or potluck
- Silent auction
- Co-op Jeopardy
- Launch an Employee Giving Program
- Curling Bonspiel or Golf Tournament
- Dress down day or casual Friday
- Raffle, hockey pool or World Cup pool
- Car wash, bake sale or 50/50 draw
- Purchase soccer balls from the National Young Leaders Committee (NYLC) to help youth savings clubs in Ghana
A great example of how employee giving has made an impact is Gay Lea Foods Co-operative Ltd. During Co-op Week, employees pay to participate and compete in a range of activities, including pie tossing, waffle breakfasts and potlucks, silent auction and a Family Feud game.
