SPRING IS HERE

Last night, I stepped outside, and I smelled it! I smelled the spring. It began with the faintest hint of rain, just a light mist falling, but then I was overwhelmed by the scent of pavement. That strange, unique smell of the first droplets on pavement, tarmac, stone, slate, patio, whatever you know it to be, you know it. As motorcyclist, some of us can smell it miles before we ride straight into it.

The point is that what I smelled signaled spring and riding weather. Last winter we were riding weeks ago. This winter has been more......traditional. So here is to riding, and the coming season!

At the shop, we have had plenty of phone calls and pickups. Our more hard core friends want their bikes.

Ducati truck in the desert

Last week, I had the extreme pleasure of attending a Ducati training session in Indian Wells, CA (think Palm Springs, the desert). On my way out from home, I made sure to have a long, loving look at the Atlantic Ocean. Hours later, I was in Manhattan Beach, California, having the most awesome fish tacos with our Ducati Business Manager, Jason Routhier. After lunch, we headed down to the beach, on the great Pacific Ocean, where I watched surfers enjoying small, but way better waves than our friends on the East coast were struggling to ride that very same morning.

Manhattan Beach Pier

Ducati is tremendously focused and on the gas. They are making the finest street motorcycles they have ever produced, and they have fully embraced the fact that most of our riders use them on the street. Really, truly, and exclusively. That's what most Ducati riders do. They ride their motorcycles, and they ride them on the street.

Do not think that I am in any way diminishing racing and Ducati's history and legacy. Quite to the contrary. The reason we have the finest and most sophisticated motorcycles in the world is racing, and all the things that Ducati has learned from it. This is one of the ultimate trickle-down examples of any company.

But, one ride on the new Hypermotard SP and the new Hyperstrada will fully inform anyone into Ducati that they, as a company, have aspirations to add a bunch of new friends to your local Ducati Owners Club, wherever that may be.

More on that later.

Happy Passover, and Happy Easter. To all of you that attach significance to these holidays, we wish you peace happiness and family love. To those of you who don't, well we wish the same for you any and every day.

RIDING THE NEW HYPERS and MULTISTRADA

As an air-cooled Hypermotard junkie, I might be the worst person to be charged with reporting on a liquid cooled, 4 valve per cylinder, 821 c.c. replacement. But oh, No!

The new Hypers kick butt, especially the SP! Power, don't worry, unless your current bike is a true superbike, and handling is better than most of us can aspire to truly ride. The Hypermotard SP, oh my, it should be tested for performance enhancing something. It packs agility, cornering, braking, acceleration and every other thing you need into a lithe muscular package that makes you, as a rider, feel dominant.

The Hyperstrada offers everyone and anyone the opportunity to own a functional Ducati, to tour two up, to ride to work every day, to enjoy a weekend away, to use your motorcycle like some of us dream of, all straight from Bologna. Damn, this bike is good.

The revised 2013 Ducati Multistrada is every bit as good as the previous generation with added wind protection and smoother low speed/rpm power delivery. The four valve liquid cooled Multistrada 1200 is one of the best all-around motorcycles ever. Imagine just making it a bit better.

I had the opportunity to ride both the Hypers and the Multis on some absolutely beautiful California mountain roads. The perfect place to test all of the attributes that make Ducatis legendary. Add to that some standing on the pegs of the new Multistradas on some rough and unpaved roads, and I can attest that these are truly do-anything motorcycles.
