By coincidence, the Monte Vista Historical Association is planning a public celebration tomorrow (May 21) for Belknap Place, a concrete roadway constructed in 1914. The origin of its name is explained in Dr. Green's book. See Below.

May 21 - Saturday - 10 a.m. Belknap Centennnial at Laurel Heights Methodist Church on the corner of Belknap Place and Mistletoe. A historical marker will be erected for the oldest concrete roadway in the state. The History of Concrete in San Antonio will be discussed by a representative of the Cement Council of Texas. A tour will be given of the 1912 Atlee B. Ayres sanctuary of Laurel Heights United Methodist Church at 12:30 p.m. Music, entertainment and food trucks will be part of the festivities which will continue until 2 p.m. Even better, there will be a display of Model T and Model A cars, plus a 1927 fire truck manned by CPG Hector Cardenas. Belknap Place was named after Augustus Belknap, Civil War veteran, civic leader, founder of the Belknap Rifles and owner of the mule driven street cars which provided the first public transit in San Antonio. The system influenced early neighborhood development. Beginning in 1878, the original route was from Main Plaza north to San Pedro Park. A mule barn was located in the present site of San Antonio College.

Collect articles for the Food Bank in Memory of Bill Shuler
Dear Members, I have been thinking about this for a while and I would like to take on Bill Shuler's job as collector for the Food Bank. We have not done this since Bill died and I think that we should start again. I would be happy to collect money and food at the June meeting. -Katie Otten
We need your numbers! As you may remember last April 2015 we started our initiative to track the numbers of visitors/guests that we interact with throughout the calendar year. This so that we can have a clear "picture" of our role in the San Antonio tourism industry. I strongly encourage you to continue to record and report your individual numbers in the monthly survey sent out by Tertia. And don't forget to also report the number of hours you may spend doing volunteer work as these numbers are also important. Those numbers reflect our role in helping our community.
We are paying extra to electronically conduct the survey so let's make sure we get our money's worth. If anyone has any questions on how to report their numbers please call or email me. -Gilbert Noriega, President
Gilbert was asked to write an article on this topic for the newsletter of the National Federation of Tour Guide Associations. To read the newsletter and find his article on pages 4-5, Click Here.
Does your web profile have your photo? A word to the wise- recently a company was looking for guides on our website and the staff member advised us that she only considered the guides with photos.
Who are these people? And why the funny hats? If you have any additional Fiesta parade photos, please send them to sanantoniotourguides@gmail.com

REMEMBER TO TRACK YOUR NUMBERS, CPGs (AND ASSOCIATES!) SEND THE NUMBERS TO US IN THE NEXT SURVEY. |
