PNWA staff advocates for navigation in Senate hearing on Columbia River Treaty

Last week, PNWA Executive Director Kristin Meira testified at a Columbia River Treaty hearing before the Senate Committee on Energy & Natural Resources. As previously reported, PNWA has been working to highlight navigation, irrigation, and hydropower as part of the ongoing Treaty review process. Meira provided testimony outlining the value of the river system and the critical importance of thoroughly evaluating the impacts of proposed changes to water flow. PNWA Senior Vice President Paul Amos, President of the Columbia River Pilots, accompanied Meira to Washington, and was on hand to provide feedback to Senate staff based on his knowledge of the river system.

Value of barging highlighted by Port of Walla Walla in Union-Bulletin

The Walla Walla Union-Bulletin has published a letter written by Port of Walla Walla Commissioner Mike Fredrickson in support of barging. The letter, which highlights the economic value of maintaining the river system, was written in response to a previous article by Lynda Mapes of the Seattle Times which reported a decline in barge traffic. For more information on barging on the Columbia/Snake River System, view PNWA's recent  press release and economic study or contact Kristin Meira.
