PNWA provides tours of river system for Congressional staff

PNWA shared time on the Columbia Snake River System with our members and Congressional staff. On August 6th, we provided a tour of the inland river system, with views from the water of the Ports of Lewiston, Clarkston, and Whitman County, as well as Lewis-Clark Terminal Association. On August 15th, Congressional staff attended a tour of the Lower Columbia River, travelling by towboat from from Shaver Transportation to view the facilities of the Ports of Portland and Vancouver, Columbia Grain, as well as getting an up close encounter with a stern buoy. PNWA members led the tours and were able to answer many questions about the vital commerce that takes place on the water, and the federal infrastructure that supports this trade.

These tours are a valuable chance for colleagues in the region and from DC to see how our economy is reliant on the river system and to hear from our members about the positive developments on the river. PNWA sincerely thanks all of our members, partners, and the Congressional staff who attended these events!

The tour paid a visit to one of the Columbia River stern buoys, which help to safely hold ships moored in the river.

President signs McMorris Rodgers' "Hydropower Regulatory Efficiency Act" in law

On August 9th, President Obama signed into law the bipartisan Hydropower Regulatory Efficiency Act, sponsored by Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers. The legislation speeds development of small hydropower projects throughout the country. The bill had previously passed unanimously in both the House and Senate. To read the text of this legislation, you may access it here.

Congresswoman McMorris Rodgers noted that "in Eastern Washington, hydropower plays a pivotal role - whether it's conventional, small, or conduit hydro - it provides 75 percent of electricity to the Pacific Northwest and represents a unique opportunity for job creation and energy production", and that "hydropower is clean, reliable, renewable and affordable." PNWA's 2013 Policies & Projects, adopted by our membership, support hydropower as a renewable resource that is critical to the Northwest economy.
