The Spirit of Columbus is not just a tagline
Favorite daughter Jerrie Mock circled the globe it in
Both Newark and Columbus claim her as their own, but Jerrie Mock is a woman who didn't let ties to any one place keep her anchored. She was the first woman to fly around the world. CCWA created a free classroom resource celebrating her achievement. It draws on newspaper articles and historic photos, reconstructing her flight itinerary as she "races" to make history.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of that flight, and a new statue was erected last month in commemoration.

Click for free unit on international tourism in Central Ohio
|
It is news to young people that a golf tournament is about so much more than golf. And, few would look at a charming elephant and see dollar signs. The reality is, many of the sights and events Central Ohioans encounter have economic back stories that connect greater Columbus to the world: the zoo is a business, golf brings in dollars, and a lot of work goes in to attracting international tourists who support our region's bottom line. The Columbus Council on World Affairs has constructed a free classroom resource with portions specific to elementary through high school classes. Timed to coincide with the Presidents Cup (being hosted in Dublin this week), the activities span social studies, math, and physical education themes. We hope you will join our effort to illustrate local and global links to area youth. You may access the free unit here: http://ow.ly/pox1K . Want even more examples of Central Ohio's connections to the world? The Global Report benchmarks the region with 15 national and 15 international cities to see how we compare in key areas. Find it at www.globalcolumbus.org. Email Stephanie Calondis Geiger for more information.

Ohio touted as model for Global Education
Regional network of school districts leading the way
The GlobalEd Network of Central Ohio was highlighted in a recent Education Week blog post, describing innovative approaches in global education sprung from Ohio efforts.
Members of this network -- a collaborative of more than a dozen school districts -- are developing the Global Scholars Diploma. This credential will verify the global competence of area graduates and be recognized by regional employers and universities. The program will be piloted in select high schools this year.

OWU grad and advisor to Condoleeza Rice visits CAHS
Ambassador Shirin Tahir-Kheli spoke with students at Columbus Alternative High School last week on the topic "The Role of Women in Muslim Society." The timing was ideal since two classes of anthropology students had just begun reading an ethnography called Guests of the Sheik by Elizabeth Warnock Fernea.

CCWA often hosts prominent speakers of international importance who have ties to Ohio. Madame Tahir-Kheli attended Ohio Wesleyan University and expressed great enthusiasm for re-connecting with greater Columbus through dialogue with young people.
Every CCWA public luncheon is webcast for free to users (see upcoming events at http://columbusworldaffairs.org/events/ for a list of topics).
Teachers may tune in and ask students to submit questions live during these events. If the timing does not align with your class schedule, anyone may access archived video of these lectures via our Vimeo channel.
The ambassadors visit was made possible by The Women's Fund of Central Ohio with support from OSU's Middle East Studies Center. It was a program of the World Affairs Councils of America with grant funding from the Carnegie Corporation of New York.
