Model AU Spring 2012

Saturday, November 17, 2012

Columbus International High School

A Model African Union (AU) simulation lets students step into the shoes of African diplomats and engage with timely global issues like elections, cyber-security, and natural resource scarcity. A collaborative of area organizations invites high school students to the 2nd Annual Model AU, set to take place November 17 at Columbus International High School.

Participants practice skills such as research, communication, negotiation, writing, and issue analysis and are exposed to college-aged mentors.

Program organizers from the Center from CIHS, The Center for African Studies at OSU, OSU's Collegiate Council on World Affairs, and the Columbus Council on World Affairs have each contributed resources to this program that that school-based clubs have everything they will need to succeed. Each group of students will represent an African nation and will be provided one volunteer co-adviser and one volunteer representative with roots in that country.

The program is free to participating schools. Only 2-5 students are needed to form a club and no extensive prior knowledge of Africa or multilateral dialogue is required. We hope you will join us in this exciting venture! The first step is identify a teacher, librarian, or other staff to convene students in club meetings from now until November 17.

If you are interested in Model AU, but unable to commit to a club for this November's event, consider attending our upcoming workshop for educators that will teach you how to recreate a simulation at your own school.  Email your interest in this to Stephanie Calondis-Geiger.

November conferences: one local, one online

Battelle for Kids has organized a conference featuring

teams of Ohio education and business leaders who recently traveled to five of the highest-performing school systems around the world. These individuals will present their assessments of how theses systems achieved significant and sustained results. Details and registration at BattelleforKids.org.

Additionally, the Global Education Conference -- coinciding with International Education Week -- is a free week-long online event that will bring together educators and innovators from around the world.  The entire event will be held online using the Blackboard Collaborate platform (formerly known as Elluminate/Wimba). It promises to "significantly increase opportunities for building education-related connections around the globe while supporting cultural awareness and recognition of diversity."  Details at www.globaleducationconference.com.

IDEAS AND RESOURCES

Bring ethnically diverse viewpoints into the classroom
(Psst....it's part of the Common Core)

Central Ohio educators who are seeking to integrate unique international voices into their students' learning can utilize a great new tool from the Columbus Council on World Affairs. Their online database is a starting point for locating volunteer speaker candidates. User selections for criteria such as "audience type," and "country" will produce a list of available speakers. It can be accessed at: http://columbusworldaffairs.org/resources/global-speakers-bureau/.

CommonCore & Global Education share important traits

Asia Society posits that "The adoption of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for English language arts and mathematics...offers educators an unprecedented opportunity to marry the skill development and acquisition of core content needed to develop globally competent citizens with the rigorous skills and core content needed to prepare all students for college and careers."

Cross-district collaboration to benefit entire region
GlobalEd Network of Central Ohio making strides

Eleven area school districts representing more than 150,000 students are coordinating efforts around a common mission: "To increase the global competency of K-12 students in Central Ohio." To achieve this long-term goal, they have begun designing a Global Scholars Diploma; this credential would help students demonstrate their ability to thrive in a global environment.

As teachers begin to implement the Common Core standards and the new PARCC assessments, the GlobalEd Network of Central Ohio will help all stakeholders understand that International Education is not a competing priority, but a way to support the type of learning described in these frameworks.

The following school districts have shown leadership:
Columbus City Schools
Dublin City Schools
Gahanna Jefferson City Schools
Licking Valley Local Schools
New Albany-Plain Local Schools
Olentangy Local Schools
Reynoldsburg City Schools
Southwestern City Schools
Upper Arlington City Schools
Westerville City Schools
Worthington City Schools

LOCAL STARS IN GLOBAL ED
world.hope.songs
world.hope.songs

Over the course of the 2011-2012 school year, sixty students in three third grade classes at Bexley's Montrose Elementary partnered with two similarly sized third grade classes at international schools in Venezuela and Singapore (as well as a sibling group of former Montrose students living in Tanzania) to share musical experiences and collaborate in writing and recording original songs.

The project was led by teacher Bill Manchester and had several phases. The Montrose students introduced themselves to their peer collaborators via a video of them singing their favorite folk song, "Chicken on a Fence Post." In videoconferencing and video exchange sessions following, students from Venezuela and Singapore shared music and games they were performing in class as well as sharing their favorite subjects, soccer teams, and what they like to do for fun.

Last January, students from Montrose began writing songs with professional recording/touring artists Katie and Jacob Eckerberger through video conferencing technology.  Students from the partner schools added additional verses and collaborated on what instrumentation to use in demo videos compiled by the two performers. The project culminated in May with the world premiere of live and recorded versions of the original songs. A professionally recorded CD utilizing student voices from all schools involved was produced.

This project, dubbed "world.hope.songs", serves as an outstanding model for other Central Ohio schools. Did you or someone else at your school do something worth sharing with peer global education practitioners?  Tell us about it here:
