Greetings, Fellows!
How can September already be upon us?  Maine summers are short, and we're sure that your summer was, too!  We hope those of you in academic environments are enjoying the return to school and work.  Please be sure to check out the latest updates on our fall retreats, and if you haven't yet registered, please note that although the registration deadlines have passed, you can still contact Erin if you would like to attend.  We will make room wherever possible, particularly for our past Fellows who wish to attend the networking portions of the retreat!  We look forward to seeing many of you at the retreats!

September Highlights:  Switzer Network News and Discussions
In this report, we explore the relationship between the business of agriculture and the business of environmental sustainability.  1992 Switzer Fellow Jeff Dlott's company, SureHarvest, provides a full set of solutions for growers and agrifood companies pursuing sustainability strategies - farming management software, sustainability management software, sustainability consulting services and third-party sustainability certification - throughout the agrifood supply chain.

For eight years, 1999 Switzer Fellow Katrina Schneider and her colleagues have taught underwater science camps that provide river education while snorkeling on the Smith River in northern California.  Now she has expanded these camps to the South Yuba River, where youth spend much of their summer, often unaware of very basic water safety protocols.  Yuba Immersion Camp's focus, therefore, has an additional component - to create a community versed in "River Speak" - a language of understanding the river, with the particular goal of increasing river safety.
Switzer Program and Network News
New England:  September 27-29, 2013 at the Warren Conference Center, Ashland, MA
California:  October 4-6, 2013 at NatureBridge, Marin Headlands, Sausalito, CA
By now, you have all received several Fall Retreat invitations.  We are at capacity for the communications training at the California retreat, but there are still a couple of spots open for the training in New England.  Contact Erin if you're interested!  Other updates:
Flash Talks
We still have space available for more Flash Talks for each retreat - remember, these are a great way to pitch an idea and receive feedback from colleagues in a fun and supportive environment!
Fellow Networking
Time for networking is in high demand, and we will supply it!  Past and current Fellows can socialize and network at receptions, dinner and the campfires on Saturday night at each retreat, and on Sunday!  Sunday will include topical discussions on career-related issues, and we will happily accommodate ad-hoc group discussions as you all make connections.  See agendas for each retreat (New England and California) for more information on Sunday activities.
California Retreat:  Sunday talk by Dr. Tyrone Hayes
"From Silent Spring to Silent Night:  A Tale of Toads and Men"
Dr. Hayes, Associate Professor at UC Berkeley, will talk about his research on pesticides and amphibian and human health, and the science and policy stories behind the research.
