People who work and earn less than $50,270 from wages, self-employment or farming may be eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and free help preparing their tax return. Tomorrow, January 25th, marks the 7th National EITC Day, a nationwide effort to increase public awareness about EITC and free tax preparation sites.
Although an estimated four out of five eligible workers and families qualify for the credit, one in five still miss EITC either because they don't claim it when filing, or don't file a tax return. This is money that can make a difference. Last year, the credit returned close to $62 billion dollars to over 27 million workers.
Workers who qualify for EITC could receive larger refunds. It can mean up to $475 in EITC for people without children, and up to $5,891 for those with three or more qualifying children. EITC varies by income, family size and filing status. The average EITC amount last year was $2,200.

United Way Can Help Navigate Your Future
Did you know that most people avoid creating their will or trust for two simple reasons? Some feel they have too little property to justify a will, yet the value of your assets (i.e. home, car, jewelry, retirement plan, etc.) can add up quickly. Others believe creating a will is an expensive proposition, however spending a small amount of time consulting with an attorney is more affordable - and a better investment - than you may realize.
Let United Way help you start navigating your plan for the future. Contact us today to receive your free Will Planner kit. It is designed to help you gather the information your attorney will need to plan for your future. You will be guided through a series of questions that will help you identify your family members, estate assets and financial goals. For more information, please contact Jane Mitchell or call (802) 861-7839. Would you like a comprehensive, easy-to-follow and free Will Planning Kit?
